GARDENER'S CALENDAR.
JANUARY. I’itctifn Garden.—The principal crops cl the cabbage tribe for winter ami spring use should be planted this month. Riant curly cabbage about twenty-one inches apart each way, and late sorts, including cauliflower and broccoli, two feet apart. Transplant locks and celery ; sow spinach. lUu ing the first week put iu the last sowing cf peas, choosing an early sort ; also make the last solving cf French beans. Make the principal sowing of turnips. Sow tur-nip-rooted ra ish aud lettuce on moist rich soil. Atten Ito the thinning of late- -sown onions and other root crops. Stir the ground frequently between the rows of all growing crops to admit air and moisture. Fruit Garden.—Plum, cherry, peach, nccfcaiino, and apricot trees may now be 1 a hied- Remove suckers from gafts, and t scare the young shoots from the effects of wind. Flower Garden.—lncrease pinks and carnations, either by pipings or layers. Cut down geraniums as soon ns they are done flowering, and sot the cuttings iu a shade 1 spot, where they will soon take root. Thin mignonette and other choice annuals. Keep every part of the garden Rue from weeds, Hoe, if possible, during bright sunshine; and this if properly done i hj the Dutch hoe, will both kill weed, and destroy slugs—which latter are very destructive at this season, particularly on
