BLACK’S.
(FROM A CORRF,3PONDEXT.) The announcement in the “ Provincial Government Gazette ” of July last of the throwing open of 2,500 acres of land in this district was received with unanimous acclamations of joy and attracted much attention from persons wishing to settle down. We now aslc the Government r»
point out the land to ns, it will be all taken up, but I am afraid like manyother good things from the Provincial Government, it has scarcely any existence, except upon paper. I am afraid that we shall have to become earnest supporters of the County System and the General Government, unless we are dealt with in a more liberal spirit by out present shuffling parsimonious rulers Supplies of everything for the mining population aie far in excess of what they are in other producing countries, Colonial produce especially. The last Escort from this district was 700 ounces, it surely deserves that some encouragement sh on'd be given to the miners to continue on and persevere. When does the Flour Mill Company start at Clyde, now that wool has tumbled down three pence per pound, the sheep farmers he induced to invest, many of the Victorian squat ters have lately given great encouragement to the small farmers by erecting them mills, patronising their Agricultural Shows <fcc. In my last correspondence, I omit ted to mention the successful establishment of a district school; the Com mittce deserves great praise for their exertions, as well as the Rev. Mr. Rosp who gave a capital lecture on behalf of the funds. The weather is boiste o is, with a heavy fall of snow on Monday last. The crops are nearly all in, some of the oat paddocks are looking extremely well. The farmers will now have time to make their fences good, some of which were thrown down by last year’s flood*. Our district races are to come off on the 27th inst, the course is in admirable condition for training, and a second day’s fun is anticipated, partly races and athelic sports; due weather maybe reckoned bv that time as these cold winds seldom last long.
