CLYDE CHORAL SOCIETY’S CONCERT.
The Clyde Clioral Society gave a Concert at the Town Hall, Clyde, on Wednesday evening last; the attendance was a, large one, every seat- being occupied. The object of the Concert was, we i believe to .assist the, funds of the Society which have been • considerably reduced of late, by the expenses attendant upon the public performance of that body. Tiie occasion being possibly the dost that Mr. : James Spensley, ,the leader .of. the .Choir will yield hia baton at Clyde, ' caused a viry gchora) : Inferest fc6 t>o'' tahfen in $e proceedings, and the pnV 1% scy,g|
vitation of the Society. The loss: of Mr Spenslfcy’s services" will' "donUtles's be an irreparable' one, he hot’ only possesses' that qualifications of an excellent leader,; ‘hut is also a‘first class musician and mstrumentalist," and must have proved- an invaluable : aid to any society, whose object was, the cultivation of the delightful art of music. Mr Browne, a gentleman fr6m Dunediri presided at the piano, and played the accompaniments in a 'style not hitherto’heard in this part of the country ; his sex-vices added in a most,'marked degree to the success of the evening. Messrs Campbell arid Spensley also accompanied oh the violin. The choir, which numbered about fifty member's, after- the Over-' tore from “ Guy Mamjeriug ” by, the baud, gave lire Glee, “ Long live Eng-, land’s future Queen ” with capital effect; Miss Brodke and Mrs/ Harper ‘fol'owecl with a Duet “ On the Blue' Wave ", which was rendered with considemb'o taste, and was loudly and deservedly applauded. Mrs. Barker ’s “No one to love ” was sung with 'much feeling. Mr. Christopher’s was -rjnite happy in “ My'pretty little Yaller Gal ” and created • much amusement.,,-. Tire choruses My bon try Lass, she smileth ”, and “ All among the Harley ” gave testimony of very careful training on the part of the members of the' Choir, who apj)C!ir:to have arrived at a state of proficiency. seldom attained in up-country d stricts. In the second part, 'quite a little lady, Miss "Mary "ane Has tie, gave Mrs. Norton’s “ Junita ’’with extraordinary good taste; and received an unanimous encore, to which she readily responded by going over the latter part of the song again to the immense delight of the audience. Miss Annie Brook’s. “ Good Bye at the Door ” ; “ Thou art near and yet so far and Mrs, • ‘arperjs “ Barney ()‘ ilea ” ahd “ Norah Mill lane.” were the real gems of the evening, and earned the audience by storm. We must not forget the sparkling chorus, ■“ Euryanthe ” by the Choir, which delighted all present. The performance concluded by “ Rule Britannia” and the “ National" Anthem ". This is probably the last Convert that' will bo g ven by the Society 'under the leadership of Mr. Spensley, whom we regret to say leaves Clyde in a very few days. " Mr. Spensley has since his residence here contributed greatly contributed greatly to the intellectual amusement of the people, aryl we are sure that .he, will carry -away with him the gqod wisjieg of a]l.
