BLACK'S.

(from a correspondent.) October 6. Much attention has of late been drawn to the land question, and, after a considerable stir about the matter, the government gazette 2,500 acres of land open for selection. But like most of the seemingly liable actions of the Provincial Government, this block has no existence save in the Gazette, as all the land that can be found by the maps open for selection is 743 acres, one half of which is utterly unfit for cultivation, it is covered up with sludge and tailings and liable to be flooded upon the least rise of the Manuherikia Biver. If the run-holder has been compensated for the loss of 743 acres of land a monstrous robbery of the public money has been perpetrated by the government, who have paid for what they must have known was not available for public purposes, no surveyor would have selected such a block of land. We are very anxious about the flour mill, which we hear is to be erected by some enterprising specula-

tors at Clyde/ A mill to grind wheat which can be grown to great perfection any where along the slopes of the Dunstan Ranges, would be the making of the District, and add greatly to its population and trade. A day school has, thanks to the exertions of the Rev. Mr. Ross been at last opened, and the attendance of youngsters is highly satisfactory. The sporting men of the place are about to hold a Spring Race Meeting to try the mettle of their nags before the great races which are to come off on the Dunstan Course this summer; subscriptions in aid of the object are coming in liberally
