ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

We do not identify ourselves with the opinions that may be expressed Viy our corraspondents. -SJJRVEYS. • (Totbe Editor cfiee DukstanTiiwr«.) Sir.—ln your leading article of Friday laetllthinet, when advoeafin- the construction of a water-race from tho Lindis to

the Dunstan you say :—" The Government proffer "professional assistance in making preliminary surveys for extensivo and difficult water-races, and, that all wo have to do is to request the services of a properly qualified officer to perform the duty of ascertaining the leve's and length of a waterrace from any given point oh the Dunstan Ranges to the Lindi3 River, and the survey would be male." I have not the slightest doubt, but, that you said this from tire advertisment put forth by the Secretary for Land and Works, stating that the Government were willing to receive such applications. Led by this advertisment, I some weeks ago applied to the Government for professional assistance in order to construct a large and difficult race, which when completed will employ fifty miners or more an' l , to my utter astonishment they informed me that I must make the survey at my own expense, and that an officer, after visit" ingotherdistricts, wouldtravcrsethe lines. The mere idea of a surveyor traversing the lines of a water-race laid off by another competent surveyor is perfectly ridiculous, and would be an insult to both gentlemen —especially when nearly all the water-races are lai 1 off by the miners themselves. Now, Sir, I hold (and I believe you will agree with me) that such conduct on th e part of the Government is dishonest and insulting to the inhabitants of theGoldlields gene .-ally. I sincerely hope that my fellow miners and other residents of the Goldfields will endeavor to remedy the present state c f things by obtaining a Local Board for tlio management of the Goldfields. I am, &c, MINER. Cromwell, Sept. 11, ISCB
