The election for the Mayoralty at Clyde has resulted in a manner satisfactorily to all parties, and the Citizens may congratulate themselves up-
on having in the person of Mr. James Haztett, a gentleman to fill the office of Mayor, who besides holding an influential position, has during his long residence in the Town, been ever foremost in promoting its interests It must be highly gratifying to Mr. Hazlett to find that the ratepayers possess such unbounded confidence in him, and in spite of the strenuous opposition made by the friends of tire opposing candidate to have found him self by such a flattering majority at the head of the poll.
To morrow will conclude the Municipal Elections, and we trust that the same good judgment will be employed by the ratepayers in their election of Councillors, as was exhibited in the election for Mayor. The Municipalities will doubtless in time be called up on to play a distinguished part in the management of affairs in New Zealand, and we may look upon them as one of the initiatory steps in local self government. We do not however advise our readers to rush pell mell and embrace the County District Road Board System upon the first possible opportunity to do so, because at the present moment, we are not in a position to make the change; There is but a very small amount of land sold in the District as yet, nor do we possess a sufficient population that we could tax for purposes of revenue ; time will however obviate this difficulty, and a very few years will doubt less see the country occupied by permanent settlers. Till then, without we can obtain liberal grants of money’ for local improvements, we must bo content to remain as we are. Our opportunity will however come, and all we have to do, is to prepare ourselves to embrace it. i
