ALEXANDRA.
(FROM OUB OW.\ T CORRESrOXDENT.) Monday, July 15. The Mayoralty -will be a walk-over this next election, no one seeming inclined to engage in the contest with Mr. Robert Finlay, -who not only posesses the full confidence of the citizens, but is doubtless best fitted to fill the civic chair. The late heavy fall of snow and the severe frosts combined have much impeded mining operations, and, with scarcely an exception, all the sluicing companies have lost fully a week. This at the present season of the year is felt heavily, as, while the Molyneux 4fcaius at a low ebb, the loss of a i gle week represents months oflabor at another season. On Tuesday hut the township was gaily dressed out with flags, on the occasion of Mr. Alexander Jack, one of the oldest and most respected residentsjbaving taken upon himself the obligations' per aining to matr'mony. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. S. Ross, and the good wishes of the Town's-people found unanimous expression in favor of the happy pair. On Monday, the new dredge, built for the most part out, of the wreck of the Alexandra, was successfully launched into its native element. The ■occasion was mad'' one of jollification, and a considerable number of well -dressed persons, including a consider ■able sprinkling of ladies assembled to do honor to the interesting ceremony of christening the machine. A plentiful supply of the good things of this life were provided, and it is almost unnecessary to say were done ample justice to by the company present. After the authodox breaking of a bottle of Champagne, and the naming of the craft, which pleasurable duty devolved upon Mrs. Itallidav, the wife of one of the chief proprietors, three cheers were given for the " Galatea ; and success was drunk in bumpers of the sparkling wine to her enterprising proprietors aud Captain Knight, the jiio eerof dredging in the Molyneux. His Worship t.e .Mayor, Mr Robert Finlay, and Messrs Thevers and Duncan Robertson made suitable addresses. The health of .Mr. Warden Robinson was proposed with three cheers, • sind duly resp.ia led to by that gentleman. Mr. Cope responded for the Press, and Messrs Knight and Holiday for the proprietors of tie' dredge. | On the same evening, Mr. W. Frn- \ sit, M.P.C. for Dnnst-fi", addressed j t'i ■'.
