BUTCHER’ MEAT.

(To the Editor of the Dukstan Timf.s.) Sir,—Through your valuable paper, will you allow me space for the following remarks. For years past the question has been asked, how is it that the price of butcher, s meat keeps at such a high rate upon the Township of Clyde, lOd. per lb.? also, who is the monopolist, the squatter, or the retail butcher ?. The cat is at length out of the bag, and the odium that has rested for go long on the squatter, is transfered to the shoulders of those, who ought to have borne it all along—the retail butchers. The true state of things has come to light the squatters have been selling their stock at reduced rates, while the butchers havecontinued to charge the same prices as they did years ago. As a proof of the above statement, there is meat being delivered in Clyde by an outsider—mutton of first class ' quality, in good order and condition at 6d. . per lb- all round, and beef of the best description, at 7d. per lb.. Perhaps the Dunstan butchers may think they are doing a good stroke of business, and wink at this , until it is too late, as in several instances I know of in the outlying districts, where the business men through keeping up high t prices, have allowed others from a consid- A ; erable distance, to come in and supply the whole of the ready money customers, and 9 take the money out of the district. I say, Sir, and that most emphatically ; . this system of business is ruinous, not only 3 to the business man, but to the district 5 generally, and that without things are si- . t»red, and a better system instituted, one and all will suffer. s Trusting these few remarks may have j the effect of opening the eyes of those spe- ; cially alluded to. t I remain 5 Your's &c. , Observer. r Ed. D.T. The above communication ) was handed to us, prior to the last issue, 3 want of space compelled us to withhold it - until to day.
