(from our own correspondent.) Dunedin. Thursday, 5 p.m. The brig Amhurst has returned from her expedition to the Auckland Islands. No evidences of human beings were visible At the Waikouaiti Races, the first day, the Maiden Plate was won byMr. Patterson's Billy ; the Handicap by Mr. M'Kay's Nigger; the Hurdle Race by Mr. M 'Kay's Patclnvork ; the District Plate by Mr. Beal's Tonic; the Town Plate by Mr. Lafferty's Schoolboy. Messrs. D. Murphy and Beeves, the Treasurers to the Irish Relief Fund, have commenced au action against the proprietors of the " Evening News. 1 ' The members of the Municipal Conference held a preliminary meeting to-day, and adjourned for the attendance of the up-country members. By common consent the subject of Fenianism is tabooed. \ The Superintendent is in favor of j opening the lands for immediate occuI pation by the people. The squatters demand an enormous , amount as compensation. It is rumored that a vote of want of confidence in the present Ministry will be proposed
