An inquest was held on Saturday last, at Lake Hayes, before Lowther Broad, Esq , District Coroner for the Arrow, on the body of Frank Marshall, who came by his death on the previous Thursday, in consequence of injuries received through the upsetting of a cup of boiling tea over his neck and chest. In the.Magistrate's Court, C romwell, on the 4th inst., before H. W. Robinson, Esq., K.M., John Butler, late of Cromwe 1, but now of the West Coast, was charged on the information of John Kelly, alias Jack (he Greek, with stealing a bay filly, his property. Mr W. L. Bailey appeared for the accused. The case lasted until a late hour in the evening, and, on behalf of the prosecution, an immense amount of hard swearing took place. From the evidence adduced it appeared that the accused, about three years ago, left the district for the West Coast, leaving behind him a number of cattle and horses. Lately he returned for the purpose of gathering together his stock, among which was the bay filly now in dispute. Eventually the Bench recognised the ownership of the horse in Kelly, but dismissed the charge, stating that the accused, evidently through mistaken indentity, had taken the horse, but not with any felonious intent. The "Timaru Herald" of the 4(h inst, says :" A prisoner named Reed, who was confined in Lyttelton Gaol, escaped on Saturday, and has not boen re-captured. This morning a prisoner named Burnside, escaped from Officer's Point, when a Warden gave chase, and overtook him near the powder magazine on the Sumner Road. A struggle ensued, and Burnside was stabbed by the warden, and killed ns tantaneously,"

In connexion with the Alexandra Temperance . ociety, a concert and soiree is announced to take p'ace on Tuesday next, the 17th inst, at the school-house, Alexandra In drawing the attention of the public to the entertainment we are guided to do so by views other than advocating the cause of total abstinence, or in any waj disparaging it: our wish is that reunions of this description may be of more frequent, occurrence, as we consider they have a most salutary effects both on the physical and moral composition of mankind, and tend greatly to render a home on the diggings more tasteful It is undeniable that whereevor one travels through the goUlfields the car is assailed by a wail of dissatisf iction at the want of sociability and the hick of amusements to which the Benedict may take his wife and family and the bachelor his sweetheart With this view wo willingly accord the subject a few line, and hope that members of the AlexandraTemperence Society, in their endeavor to provide an evening's rational amusement, may meet with that success which may inducement to follow up this, their second entertainment, with many of a like character.

Wc have received from the publisher, Mr. Willi im Hay, of Dunedin, a copy of the first number of a monthly magazine, entituled the " Illustrated New Zealand Herald." The publication contains no less than ten capitally executed wood engravings, representing local and Australian scenery, and also incidents connected with the visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to Victoria and Tasmania. Mr. Hay's enterprise in placi g before the New Zealand public a really excellent illustrated paper should command support, and we may safely prophecy a prosperous career for our pictorial contemporary. A more eilicient means of conveying information of the land we live in could not bo sent by the mail steamer to the "Old Folks at Home."

According to an American paper they have curious notions of law and justice in Mexico. The members of the Court Martial upon General Sswita Anna have been sentenced to four years' imprisonment for " undue leniency." A correspondent writing to the " Scientific Amercan," says that he has tried, with complete success, the following method of keeping potatoes, even though, in some instances, the tubers were diseased when taken out of the ground :—" Dust over the floor of the bin with lime, and put in six or seven inches deep in potatoes, and dust with lime as before. Put in six or teven inches of potatoes and dust with liinc again, repeating the operation until all are stored away. One bushed of lime will do for forty bushels of potatoes, though more will not injure them, the lime rather improving the flavor than otherwise,"

'lie Kjjeoh fchooting Match that was fldsjertised to take place on Saturday'last at Alexandra, came off in due course; the number of sportsmen present was most satisfactory, showing that great interest in sport of this nature is felt. Proud, first, H Potts, second, and T, Brown, third As will be »een by an v dvertisement in thi» day's issue, a second match will take place on the 21st instant, when it it expected there will be some good aport, as we are assured there will be a number of entries. The Switzer's correspondent to the " Tuapeka Times" says:—:" Switzer's is now the place for a man with a small capital: it would prove a sure fortune to him to bring in waterraces, as it is certain the mines there will last for a generation to come. The gold is of a rough- nuggetty description, and weighs very heavy. Carney and party are building a large reservoir on the top of Frenchman's Hill. It is a curious thing that Mr. "Warden Stra'.ford, while acknowledging the increasing population of the district, should, at the same time, ignore it in his report, and go out of his way to rcfor to the Tuapeka miners—those, it is supposed, who have gone from Tuapeka to Switzer's as the Tuapeka Graballs. Dear Mr. Warden, how could you allow yourself to forget your honorable position, yea, the dignity of that position, by such an unguarded and ungenerous expression as that used in your report with reference to Tuapeka miners 1 Can it be that, from the increase of population, you fear an increase of your duties, and you simply, by way of relieving your bunle ed feelings, gave expression to such unwarrantable language? In your next monrlily report perhaps you will use more polite language, for the Tuapeka diggers, although generally a rough sort of people, like most diggers, seldom possess the unenviable characteristic of Graballs.
