Mr. Colclough's Fenian (Doherty) 1 Glassford's Dragoon (Monaghan) ... 2 Shepherd's Black Bess Crawcour's Kettledrum Fenian jumped off with the lead at starting, followed by Dragoon, who was doubtless held back too long, and could not put in a first appeareuce. Frankton Handicap, Sweepstakes i f 5 Sows. with 75 Sovs. added. Js'ominations and Acceptance, £4 4s 0. Mr. Smitham's Mailboy 1 Glassford's E lith 2 Glassford's Schoolboy 3 Betting, two to one on Edith was offerred and freely taken, the field was also taken at these odds, Monaghan for Mr, Glasford declared to win with E lith ; Schoolboy made the running for the first mile and a half; the mare was badly ridden, and could not be kept on tho course, Mailboy finding his chance a good one put on steam, and a splenid race ensued, the mare being beaten by a neck. Wakatip Handicap of 25 Sovs., open to all horses owned in the Wakatip and Nokomai Districts. Mr. Limbriek's Traveller 1 Schole's Scrubber .. 2 Garryowen and Fenian were entered and accepted for thi3 race, but were subsequently scratched. There was a hard struggle at the first between the pair, but Scrubber, who is now 23 years old, was compelled to give way to youth and superior strength. He is a wonderful old horse, and his owner ought by this time to be satisfied with his performances and pension the poor old horse off. Hack Selling Race of 20 Sovs. Mr. Appleby's Garnet 1 Scholes'Hoppy .. 2 Five others started. The winner was sold for £33. The attendance on the course was very small, the weather being the reverse of pleasant. There were, very few miners present, the large quantity of snow that hud fallen during the night had doubtless put a stop to all travelling in the back gullies. SECOND DAY. Sunshine and warmth was an agreeable change from the bleak cold winds of yesterday, and the attendance largely increased accordingly. The course presented a very agreeable appearance, and the largo number of well-dressed people took us by surprise. The mining community were not so well represented as might have been expected, but the Lakes district is an extremely scattered one, and there must be really some. thing very enticing to draw together any large concourse of miners. Ladies' Purse of 20 Sovs. One mile and a half. Gentlemen riders. Entrance two guineas. Mr. Glassford's Schoolboy (M'llroy) ... 1 Scholes'sScrubber (Smitham) ... '2 Colclough's Fenian Shepherd's Black Bess Lakes District Handicap of 75 Sovs. Two miles. Entrance and acceptance, live guineas. Mr. Limbriek's Traveller 1 Smitham's Mailboy 2 Glassford's Edith The mare bolted clean off the course ; the race between Traveller and Mailboy was hotly contested. Hurdle Race of 50 Sovs. ; one mile and a half heats, over five (lights of hurdles. Mr. Glassford's Dragoon.. .. 3 11 M'Morran's Camel .. .. 13 2 Mallaghan's Garryowen .. 22 0 In the first heat Camel won easily, hut when going round for the second time, be fell heavily at the second jump, Garryowen did the same at the third jump, falling heavily on his neck, and lay so still afterwards that everyone thought he was killed and a regular rush ensued to where he layHe managed to get up at last apparently unhurt. Dragoon, ridden by Monaghan jumped exceedingly well, his only fault being that he lacks speed. Garryowen was in excellent, condition, but carried far too much flesh. Camel was both lame and lean, and by no moans prepossessing in appearance, however he possesses the necessary qualities in speed, and is likewise a sure jumper, but he has a nasty knack of touching every hurdle, and loses much ground in consequence. The Consolation Handicap was run for on the third day, also a number of other reces. The sport was really good, and a very fai attendance of persons were present.
