DUNSTAN JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

Second Pay. The attendance on the Course to day was a great improvement on yesterday. The vehicles plying between Clyde and the Course were crowded with passengers, one of them, belonging to Mr M‘ Dougall of Queenstown, fairly broke down with its hu man freight, depositing its occupants in the deep sand near Mr, Feraud’s Farm, which, although unpleasant as far as outward appearances went, the absence of broken bones must be attributed to this fact. The booths appeared to drive a flourishing trade, the increased amount of dust, favored by the high wind doubtless increased the ’mbibing powers of the populace. Messrs Hensburgh and Stanbrook of the Refreshment department of the Grand Stand, found the demands for the solids quite as brisk as yesterday, but their ample arrangements were feqtial to the emergency. Mr. Winstanley, of Booth No. 1, had also made ample arrangements for supplying his customers, and in no case could the public grumble at the performances of those who catered either for their amusement or something more substantial. Miners’ and Packers’ Purse of 20 Sovs. One mile heats. Mr. Ashworth’s c. g, Kettledrum ... 1 1 Keenan’s c. g. Eufus 22 M’Morran’s b. g Arkwright Handyside’s b. g. Mozart Foxwell’s b. m, Jenny Holt’s b. m. Flareup. Well contested Race. . Rufus led off, followed closely by Arkwright and Kettledrum. At the straight running Kettledrum popped into second place, when a close contest ensued, Kettledrum only winning by half a length, Arkwright a good third. In the second heat Kettledrum ran third for nearly half the distance, when he challenged the two, and passing between them came in a winner by a length. The excitement atthe finish was intense, and considerable sums of money changed hands. Town Plate of 150 Sovs., weight forage. Winner of the Dunstan Jockey Club Handicap 51b. penalty. Three miles. Entrance seven guineas. Mr. Taggart’s b. g. Schoolboy (Monaghan) 1 Cox's b. g. Harkaway (Goodman) .. 2 The third horse (Musician) entered for this race Was scratched, his tv-or having determined to give him a pell till next season. It appears that Mftsi; an broke down while training at Matskauui, and has never properly recovered. Schoolboy took the lead from the start, and kept the running to the finish, winning in a canter.. Steeplechase Handicap of 100 Sovs. Nomination and acceptance, four guineas. Over four miks of country-. Mr. Glassford’s c. g. Dragoon (Monaghan) 1 Glassford’s b. g. Daniel O’Rouke .. 2 These were the only entries, and the race was net worth calling such. Daniel only went to make the race, and neither himself nor Dragoon made anything of a show approaching to respectability. As to the water jump Dragoon Would not look at it, and only passed the -nibicon with the-as-sistance of his jockey, who removed one of the hurdles with his band. This was objected to by the Stewards, who declared it race. Daniel O’Rcuks was ihsn sent

0 round, but still the Stewards were not 0 satialied, and the matter is referred to the e Melbourne Jockey Club. 1 Ladies* Purse of 30 Sots. Welter weight ’ for age. Gentlemen riders. Waverley Cox’s b. g. Harkaway, A very good race throughout, and to within the lest half mile victory seemed in ! favor of Idle Boy. Kate ran wery well at the start, but soon dropped from first posh 5 tion to that of fourth. The race was, however, between Young Alma and Idle Boy, . the latter winning by a length. » THIRD DAY. There Was a very fair attendance on the course. The raftling for Schoolboy, who was put up for £l5O, doubtless caused much interest to be taken in the events of the day. Mr. Simpson was the lucky winner of the chestnut, which will now join the Matakanui stud. Till about four o’clock the wind blew a perfect gale, and terrific clouds of dust swept over the course, completely blinding everything. At last a welcome shower changed the state of affairs and reduced matters to something like comfort. Hack Race of 20 Sovs. Catch weights. Gne mile heats. Mr. Glassford’s c, g. Hospital Race for £27 135., the whole to be given as a subscription to the Dunstan District Hospital. Dr. Shaw’s c. g. Idle Boy ... 1 Mr. Limhrick’s b. g. Traveller 2 j Six horses started. Dr. Shaw’s horse winning was greeted with lend applause ; j in fact, such, should have been tho case under any circumstance, the worthy doc f or being House Surgeon to the Institution. It !isto be hoped that next year r. Shaw will be more fortunate. His horse is a game little creature, but, coming late into training had hot recovered from the effects of the physicking which was given him at first. The Doctor will doubtless know better for the future, than that because rhysic is undoubtedly good for bis patients it is not proportionately so for his horses.
