CROMWELL TOWN COUNCIL.

Ti{e usual fortnightly meeting was held at the Municipal office on Monday, the Oth inst. Present the Mayor, Councillors Kidd, Whetter, and Smitham. Tho minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was readh from the Secretary of Land and Works, informing the Council th&t instructions had been given for the establishment of a telegraph nffice at Cromwell. A memorial was read from a number of the ratepayers'rOsp'ecting the action taken cy the Council in reference to Mr. Goodger's' building on the south side of Melm'arestrcct. Received, and ordered to stand over till next meeting of the Council. A communicotion from the Town Surveyor was ordered to stand over until there •was-a. full Council. Proposed by Councillor Smitham, That the assessment be allowed. Seconded by Councillor Kidd, and carried. Proposed by Cr. Whetter, seconded by Cr. Smitham, and carried, That a rate of one shilling in the pound be declared. Proposed by Cr. Whetter, That tenders be called for the completion of the kerbing and footways in Melmore-street. Seconded by Cr. Kidd, and carried. Proposed by Cr. Whetter, That the Council discontinue the occupation of the office rented from Mr. J. Lawrence, and that in future the meetings bo held in the School House, until a Council Chamber is built. ■Seconded by'Cr. Kidd, and carried. The report if the Finance Committee was read and adopted, and accounts to the amount of £IUO 15s. were ordered to be paid. The usual vote to the chair closed tlrj proceedings.
