James Charles Thompson (late Clerk to the Bench at Lawrence) wrs brought up in custody at Dunedin, on Saturday last, and charged before the Hon. / Mr. Strode, R.M. and C. E. Haughton * Esq. J. P. with embezzling certain monies, the property of the Genera} Government. The Commissioner of Police stated that the prisoner had only been arrested that morning at Port Chalmers, and applied for a remand for seven days, so as to permit of an investigation being made into his ae counts. The prisoner was remanded accordingly. A serious accident and loss of two valuable horses, the property of Mr. W. Goodall of the Cromwell Coal Pit, occurred at the Shotover River on Sun day afternoon last. Mr. Goodall w/C returning from Queenstown wit Mb dray laden with timber, and drawn by three horses; when he had reached about the middle of the river, ho got into a deep place, the dray was immediately overset by the force of the current, and two of the horses . speedily drowned, the one that escaped having managed to extricate itself by breaking loose from its harness. Mr. Goodall was rescued with great difficulty by a boat from the shore. The want of a bridge across the Shotover, is a serious impediment to traffic, and if something is not shortly done either in the building of a bridge, or the improvement of the fording place, loss of human life will be an inevitable consequence. The matter will doubtless be strongly urged upon the Superintendent, when he visits the Lakes district, which will probably be within the next fortnight. The Cromwell Town Council held their usual fortnightly meeting on Monday the 11th inst. The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Barry and full Council were present.
