FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1867.

The Mayoralty of Clyde being ren dered vacant by the resignation of Mr J. I). Feraud, it is earnestly to be desired that, at the nomination, which takes place to day, the rate-payers ■will select some person to fill the important Office of Mayor, -who -will not only add dignity to the position, but be a credit to the Citizens likewise. Wc must wish it to be distinctly understood by these of our readers residing in the Town of Clyde that, their selection of a person for Mayor, is a matter to which much outside attention will be drawn, as in his person is represented—or supposed to be so—the intelligence and moral worth of those who elect him, therefore people should hesitate in committing themselves to an act, which here after they may have cause to regret. Country Municipalities are but yet in their infancy iu New Zealand, and it* the people of Otago possess a I desire for local self government, Municipal institutions must be carefully fostered, they may be unpretentious at present, but they will become greater in time, and possess considerably enlarged functions. The country is but young as yet, nevertheless its resources are vast and manifold, and without a doubt tills lictlo sea girt island of the South will some day take ;.n important place amongst the groat nations of the earth. V e would or.ee more impress upon toe < ''lizciis of Cycle the necessity of making a wise and careful selection, and not to let vheir judgment be warp ed by any personal feelings, the capacity for office, and its fub'lment with credit, both to the aspvant for the honor likewise to themselves, should be the sole directing agent in fixing their choice. W*e have no desire to dictate who should, and who shomd not be Mayor, that matter can safely be left to the good judgment of the electors themselves, whom we are sure will not relax in their exertions to still presetve Clyde as one of the model Municipal Towns.
