THE CROMWELL RACES.
We do not identify ourselves with the opinions expressed by our correspondents.)
TO THE EDITOR OF THE DUX STAN TIMES. Sir,— lu your last issue, a report of the proceedings of the Dunstan Jockey Club appeared,' by which, 1 perceive that a determination has been arrived at by that body to hold their Race' meeting at Clyde on the 26th 27th and 2Sth December next, and by the same report I also perceive that a Committee has been appointed to wait upon the sportsmen of Cromwell, with a view of making arrangements, by which the Daces of Cromwell, and those of Clyde may not clash with each other. The sportsmen of Clyde were fully aware when they fixed the above dates for their races, that the Cromwell races had been arranged to come off on the 26th and ** th of December, and that the said arrangement had been made public through the columns of your journal. For the Dunstan Jockey Club to name the 26th and 27th as two of its racing days is anything but generous, and to appoint a Committee to induce a change in the dates of our races is most insulting, and proof indisputable that an element of selfishness exists in the constitution of the Jockey Club, which no sterling sportsman can but deplore. If the members of the committee referred to, be desirous of passing through life uninsultod, let them not attempt to cross the Cromwell bridge on the mission entrusted to them. The residents of the Cromwell district held no races last year, and Clyde reaped the benefit of their funds, and horses, and surely they have a just right to expect that the Dunstan Jockey Club will not inter fere with their sports on the days appointed for them to take place. As to funds, we expect none, nor want any from the Dunstan district, we are Quite able to raise a sufficient amount, to offer stakes equal to any, which may be offered this year in the Province ; and as to horses, we can produce together with those of the Lakes District, quite sufficient to make the meeting a creditable one. However as a matter of fair play, it is to he hoped that the Dunstan Jockey Club will see the advisability of altering its arrangements. By inserting the above in your columns, you W'ouhi render service, not only to the sporting community, but no doubt to the public generally in the district of Cromwell. Respectfully Yours, J. FLEMING Member of the working commmittee of the Cromwell Races. Fawarau Gorge, Sth Oct. 1567.
