KAWARAU GORGE.

(FROM A CORKESrOXDENT.) 18th. Sept. 1867. Robinson, 'Berriam and party, and Knutzen and party washed tip last week, and considering the time of the year, the returns proved highly satisfactory ; other sluicers, including Messrs Kitchingham and Rohei-ts will wash up in a fortnight hence and there is every reason to helieve that they will be well re warded for their labor during the last three months. Town improvements are being carried on steadily, and this week the erection of a very fine Ball-room will be completed for Mrs Robinson of the Sluicers' Arms, the opening of the room will be celebrated by a Ball. The Gorge is likely to become a place of importance, it having many oth er resources besides its rich-mines. 'lt -is proposed that a course of lectures for cha ritable objects, be delivered throughout the Dunstan and Kawarau districts. There are Gentlemen at Clyde, Alexandra and

Cromwell, perfectly capable of standing up before an audience, and speak for an hour in a creditable manner, were they only to turn their atteotion to a subject during their leisure hours, and should they do so, much information would be diffused amongst us, and mental improv.e ment would follow as a matter of consequence. The residents ol Gorgetown are determined to show a commendable example by having lectures delivered here at say, every three weeks ;as a start Mr George Humphreys has consented to de:iver a course of three or four lectures, the first to be in October next. As there are three gentlemen at Gorge town ready to follow-up the first course a considerable amount of funds will eventually be raised, probably for the Dunstan Hospital. The fact of the funds being in a very low state has caused much regret in this locality, and from what I can learu there are none here, but ate willing to contribute in some way or other towards placing the Institution in a satisfactory position, so far as its pecuniary requirements are concerned.
