CROMWELL.

[KKOM 01 - R OWN COItttESrOXDEXT.] 28th Aug. 18(37. Municipal honors are not at all times unattended by annoyances, tlic Mayor of this Incorporated TWn lias felt of lute that Civic honors are not to be coveted. The municipalities of Otagoare of late creation, and many blunders in carrying out the Municipal Ordinance must be nat urally expected Through an oversight the Mayor, Mr W J. Barry, did not sign the required declaration within iivo davs after his election. The Councillors refused to recognise liis election. Mr ITa-'-gitt, the Provincial' So'icitor was telegraphed to for an opinion by the Mayor. In reply, Mr Haggitt said that Mr Barry's election was valid, provided he had not received a notice from the Town Clerk to sign the declaration, in that case, the Town Clerk should serve the Mayor with such notice, when the signing should follow. The Councillors have taken the opiuioaofMr Jus. Smith of Dunedin, and to day his opinion reached Cromwell, but proved to be the very reverse to Mr Ha"gitt's. Which of the two learned gentlemen is right, must remain a. mystery for some time to come ; a number of the ratepayers in r.'iHeipation of a fresh election, presented Mr Barry to day with the following address, — To W. J. Barry, Esq. Mayor of Cromwell, Sir'—We the undersigned rate-payers of the Incorporated Town of Cromwell, having heard with regret that your enemies have succeeded in ousting you from the Municipal chair through a mere technical informality we do hereby request
that you will allow yourself to be placed iu nomination for the office of Mayor of Cromwell; and we pledge ourselves to use our best endeavours to secure your return. The affair has caused a large amount of acrimonious feeling, and how the matter will <eud I cannot at present pass an opinion. In the last issue but one of the " Dunstan Times" a letter appeared, headed " The Church in Sardis " the object of the writer was evidently to secure a minister of religion to officiate at Clyde, Cromwell and Alexandra; already the people of this district are moving in the matter, and one gentleman stated to day that he would ve .£lO 10s Od per annum towards payi.i<* the stipend of a minister. A committee will be formed here in a few days to carry out this most desirable object ; the residents of Clyde and Alexaiulraw.il be invited to join.
The Municipal Council have declared the Ofice of Mayor vacant, and have issued a notice that the nomination of candidates will take place on Wednesday next the 4th £ept- and a poll, if necessary oa the £Alowing Saturday. After the determination of the Councillors becoming known, a requisition was pr seuted to Mr Barry, by his supporters, asking him, to allow himself to beonci more placed in nomination Mr George Wellingt n Goodyer, one of the earliest and most, respected residents in this town, will become a candidate for the Mayoralty, andJl think with much chance of success. A money order office •with Saving's Dank attached, would be a rgreat'boon to 'the people of-this district, and the attention of the Government should be directed to the matter. I may however say, that -the late Mayor, Mr Barry promised to do so, also to procure ■ the election of a Church committee, both -of these matters he i.eglected, but whoever -is to-be the Mayor this time?, must be care vful to fulfil his promises.
