CROMWELL.
[FROM OtfK OWH CORIIKSPOKDENT.] Cromwell, Aug. 14. Thb Weutmorelai.d Water Race is fast approaching completion, and in three weeks' time the banks of the Kawarau and the Clutfia will be sluiced by its waters. The proprietors deserve every credit for their enterprise, and the Kawarau district cannot fail to be prosperous while such plucky men a3 Kelly, Edwards, and party reside iu it. A t the Kawarau Gorge the aluicers are in their glory, by reason of the abundance of water at their command, The new water race, the Lord Byron, affords its owners, Messrs. Kichingham and Roberts, ten heads of water, the night water being saved by the extensive dams erected by them which enables them to sluice an immense amount of grouud. The claims of Ashworth and party, Robinson and Perriam, and the Mataura cumpany are being actively worked, and washings-up of a very sati-factory character are anticipated. Thieves havebeen at work, and the Mataura Company's tail race has been plundered of a large amount of washdirt a few days since. A=l tho claims are now guarded at night, though such guard entails considerable expense. At Pipeclay and Smith's Gullies the miners are earning handsome wages Water is abundant, and six hours a day spent in labor is sufficient to earn, not only wages, but something extra. The irresistible Race, belonging to Messrs. Tippett, near Cromwell, is making a " pile" for its owners, and the hired hands are paid the highest wages given on the goldfields. At Quarts-reef Foint the sluicers are w»}l satisfied with their lot, and they one fad- all «ecm to have settled down for life. | Gully.is Jtoskimg ej>, acd
tie miners who have remained th ere during the last three or four years have done very well. The ftise and Shine Water-race Company are doing well, and the Aurora Company are also in a flourishing condition. The race 3of the companies are calculated to keep Bendigo Gully lively for years to come. The Rip and Tear party have spent close upon twelve months in opening a deep outlet through a gorge at the lower end of Bendigo Flat. About a fortnight ago their arduous task was finished, and the company are now in open ground, and the gold may be plainly seen in the washdirt from the surface to the bed rock. The work of opening this gorge was a most trying one, both to the patience and purse; but the disciples of Job have a imre fortune , before them, and they deserve it. Bendigo Gully is a friend in need at all times to the luckless digger. The boxsluicing carried on there is so easy that the wherewith to purchase the necessary provisions may be obtained in a few hours, at all events in a day. At the Lindis there are three parties doing what is vulgarly called " A stroke on the quiet. The Lindis district has not been sufficiently tested as yet; but, beyond doubt, it will at no distant day be a goldfield of more than ordinary importance. The whole country surrounding Cromwell is auriferous and mining operations will be carried on twenty years hence on an infinitely more extensive scale than at present.
