DRYBREAD.

(FEOM A CORRESPONDENT.) This locality is slowly but surely improving, although at the present time money—that so much coveted and needful commodity—is very scarce on account of the drought, which has been universally fait, I may venture to say, all over the Province. The miners and business people have been taking advantage of the lull as it were, to build themselves substantial dwellings, which altogether gives the place a more lasting and settled appearance. Lately an agency of the Bank of New Zealand, under the management of Mr R. Redborough, has been opened here, which will be a great convenience to the immediate neighbourhood. Hitherto, any person requiring business done beyond m-ling their gold, were compelled to go to 'lack's or Pt Bathan's, incurring expense, delay, and consequently inconvenience; and T trust the bank directors will have •cause to bo pleased with the amount of business done at this branch. Your correspondent has much p'casure in recording the fact of tenders having been called for, for the conve} r anco of a weekly mail to this so long neglected but not unimportant diggings. The service is to commence on the first of May, and the community are looking forward with pleasure to the time when they can post or receive their letters without sending eight miles to the nearest post-office. lthough the great scarcity of water has prevented miners from working more than eight hours out of the twenty-four • a number of them have ben busy prospecting, and I may say not without sue cess—nearly the whole side of one large hill has been taken up in extended claims and only await the much desired water to bring forth the hidden treasure? that lie there concealed. There are several Small watov-races applied for by the more enterprising or fortunate, and it is believed that a much larger supply will ere long be brought in by uniting some of the smaller creeks and lagoons into one body. Several families have been added to this population from Black's, and a large site has been marked out for a dancing saloon—shewing the great faith people -have in the mining recourses of this place. Last Fatnrd 'y a post mortem examination was made by Dr Geo. Harvey, on the the body of an infant son of Mr J. Cloves, aged three days, who expired rather suddenly. Inflamation of the bowels was the cause of death. The weather has'every appearance of a 'change—we had a slight fall of rain on the night of the 23rd inst., and in all probability will soon get some more. An accident of a very serioiu nature occurred hero on Sunday last. It appears that Mr and Mrs llinchcliff were just leaving their stove in a four-wheeled vehicle, when the horse bolted, throwing Mrs llinchcliff to theground with great vio-o; ce, whereby one of her arms was 1 rokon and her face frightfully lacerated ; Mr HinchclifF was also thrown out, but escaped uninjured, providentially I must say, as he was dragged some considerable distance—his boot having become entangled with the break-handle. The injured lady was at once conveyed to Clyde and placed under the care of Dr Shaw, who pronounces her injuries not to be so serious as to endanger life.
