ALEXANDRA.

| A MUNICIPALITY. 30thliarch, ISC7. A public meeting was held at the Royal Vail Motel, on Thursday evening last, to take into consideration the .desirability of having the town of Alexandra created into a Municipality. fc'r Robert Fiulay occupied the chair, and during the proceedings gave many proofs of his earucstt,c»3 in the movement. Mr Hastedt was the first speaker, a.td iu a very lucid Bpeech described the advantages of a town being constituted a municipal one. iie said that (lydc would not have its present proud pcsi'ioE ha." it ,et bee i proclaimed a mu; .icipality lie considered that Alexandra deserved as much attention from the Government as any locality in the possession of the British j Grown, lie moved that Alc-xa' clra be

made a municipal town, and that the au thorjties be at once memorialised to have it so constituted. 'L'li*; remarks of Mr Haste t were approved of by the unanimous show of hands. Mr Theyers said that a public body in any community should have a recognised standing, therefore, to have a municipal council at Alexandra, would be of bouudless benefit to the district, as the Government would then be called upon to pay attention to the locality, and-it would also place the town upon an equal footing with ! lyde and Cromweli. Cromwell, ro doubt, had its golden resources, and 0 yde its commercial importance; but neither of the places was more entitled to a municipality than Alexandra, and he, the speaker, earnestly endorsed the sentiments of Mr ilastedt, and hoped that the residents of the district would rot rest until the town of Alexandra shall have its Mayor and Town-Council. Mr Peter Calder and Mr A. Jack, together with Mr Faoclison and others, spoke with much energy and discretion in favor of the movement, and the following gentlemen were elected as a committee to procure the necessary number of signatures to the memorial, to be presented to tho Government bearing upon the object of the meeting :—Messrs kinky, Hyan, Theyers, Jack, O'ilegan, Leslie, Hastedt Terry, L'ooley, Bercsford, Wylde, Watkim, Hiljhousc, M.'Kersic, Henderson, and Evans. Mr James Henderson was appointed secretary, and Mr Itobcrt Finlay perpetually to be the chairman of al meetings which may be held until Alexandra shall have been created a municipality. The meeting, on the whole, was the most enthusiastic ever held in the district, and its object was that which ought to have engrossed the attention of the inhabitant long since. The resources of this part of the Dunstan district are necessarily increasing in their value, and every reasonable hopes may be safely entertained that, the sunniest days in the prosperity of the town of .Alexandra arc yet to dawn, hence. Thejollowinggentlemen were appointed a committee to draw up the memorial:— Messrs Jack, Finlay, Henderson, Beresford, and Ryan.
