THE VICE REGAL VISIT TO ALEXANDRA.
His Excellency, Sir George Grey entered the Town on Wednesday the f>th instant shortly after 12 o'clock, from Clyde, escorted by n large body of horsemen, who had ndden out some four miles to meet hin*
His Excellency and suite occupied two o Cobb and Cos' coaches, the foremost, in which His Excellency rode, was drawn by Mr Langley, Road Inspector to MesTri Iloyt and Co. The cortege was welcomed by the School children at the entrance to the Town, it drove"up Broadway, and turning up Camp Street, halted a little above the Geelong Hotel, where Mr Robt. Finlay presented the following address. TO HIS Excellency SIR GEO. GREY, K. C. B Governor and Commander in Chief in and over the Islands of New Zealand, aiid Vice AdmiraPof the same. May it please your Excellency. We the undersigned residents in Alexandra., and representing the inhabitants thereof desire to approach Your Excellency with assurances of a most cordial welcome to thi s kne of the most important mining Disjects in the Province of Otago, and the pleasure we feel in being able personally to express to you our heartfe t loyalty to Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, and for you as Her Majesty's Representative. We most respectfully congratulate you upon the hearty reception, Your Excellen" cy has met with, during your tour through this Province, and trust this address will be received by Your Excellency in the sbirit in which it is intended, that, of great admiration of Your Excellency's past Government. Trusting that Your Excellency may Ion" be spared to govern this Colony, and that your visit may be productive of much pleasure and valuable information to yourself, and a benefit to the Colony, And we have the, honor to be, Your Fxeellency's mo-it humble and obedient servants.
His Excellency after some remarks respecting his tour through the Goldfields, read a written reply, which he afterwards presented to Mr Finlay. The Coitego immediately afterwards drew up to the School House, where a handsome dejeuner had been Prepared On alighting, he was heartily cheered by 7 the inhabitants, who, young and old were assembled to meet him, the School chil- ] dren, with banners in hand, being arranged near the entrance to the building. His | Excellency shook hands with all the \\ain;sters as he passe 1, and expresicl I great Pleasure at seeing them. The ta- j blr-s were elaborately' laid out with tho ! delicacies of the season, and about thirty gentlemen, exclusive of rb's Excellency i and suite, sat down, Yr Robert Finlay oc- ! c ipving the Chair After the good things j hid been discussed, the Chairman after j the usual Inya' toasts proposed—His Excellency, Sir George Grey. His Excellency briefly replied, that he j was surprised to find such an important Township at Alexandra, and that it was j so beautifully decorated, believed that I when Her Majesty the Queen lvardof the loyalty of her subjects in this distant part of Her empire, she would be well pleased, could assure them that under such circumstances, their love and respect would be the more acceptable. From what he had seen of the miners, he had become exceedingly attached, and took great interest in them, believed that they were a most enterprising body of men, but of which too little was known, and he would hope that some competent man would some day or another write a history of this interesting class of people. Applause. His Exeellency, being pushed for time, himself and suite left the room, and after again shaking hands with the youngsters "assembled outside, took Ids seat in the coach, and the vice regal party left amidst much cheering for the Teviot, being escorted some distance on the road by a numcr- ' ous cavalcade of horsemen.
