VISIT OF HIS EXCELLENCY Till GOVERNOR TO CLYDE.
0:i Tuesday last the long expected visit of His Excellency Sir George Grey, to Clyde was U'i fait accompli. His Excellency arrive J abcu half past six o' c : oc': from Cromwell, escorted by the Mayor, Councillors, ToM-n Clerk, and .-.■ bout sixty horsemen. His Excellency and suit? occupied two of Cobb and Co' coaches, which had conveyed them from Dunedin, via Oimarato Vfanaka. Mr Eobt. M'Moran acted as Marshal upon the occasion, lis having arranged the Escort at Gibb'sllalf Way Hous2. At th: entrance to Sunderland Street His Excellency was mot by tlio Brethren of the Ancient Order of Foresters, Soaring tiieir regalia, and by th\j children attending the Clyde Sunday and . ay School, who were drawn up in line or. cither side of the roadway, immediately on ap; reaching Ihc spot where the children were standing, the coach, containing His Excellency, the Tier. Mr Thatcher, Private Secretary, Captain Hope. Major Grey, Major Richardson, and Mr Robert Campbell, M. H. R. drew up, and the youngstcrs sang the first verse of the National An. them. A very pretty little girl, Miss Margaret Hasiie, the daughter of Mr Joseph Hastie, of Clyde, presented his Excellency with a bouquet '<{ flowera, with which, hi 3 Excellency expressed himself highly pleased, and thanked the fair giver in the most endearing terms, after which, a lad, Master Henry Jno. Cope presented an address on behalf of the children attending the Schools which his Excellency most graciously received, promising to return an answer th' 3 next day- The procession then resumed its courso at a walking pr.ee to the Dunstan Hotel, where quarters had been prepared for the reception of His Excellency and suite. Sunderland Street was crowded with people, who loudly cheered His Excellency till ho alighted at th 0 door of the Hotel, where he was formally introduced to the Mayor, Councillors, Town Clerk and Auditors. Thc Street presented a very gay appearancebeing spanned at either end, and in the centre by triumphal arehos of evergreens. The arch
at the upper end of the Street, bore the inscription''.Welcome to Clyde," that at tho lower end "Peace and Plenty " with tho addition o" a transparency, widen had a remarkable pleas big effect when illuminated at night. Tho centre arch, which spanned the Street, at the Town Hall, was a magnificent, and tastefully erected structure, and was greatly admired by all that Daw it, Rh Excellency himself expressed surprise that such peifjotion could be attained in an up-eounlry town; the arch waabout eighteen test in height, with buttresses m either side, each buttress being pierced wit!' in arch, o-i a level with tho spring of the mai;' arcb, tho centre of tho structure, was surmou. t ed with a very handsome' Crown, and faciei with emblems representing tho various industries, for instance, devices made of picks and ■'novels, represented the miners—A Bale oi wool rhe Sqatters—A plough, rakes, forks, and sheaves of corn, the Agriculturists—A transpa rsney immediately under' the Crown, bure inscriptions " Yivat Regina" and "Our Resour--053." A number of handsome flags were tastefully displayed over all, which had a most handsome effect.
