DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL.
The annual general meeting of the subscribers to the Dunstan District Hospital was held on Monday evenirjg last, at the Council Chambers, Sunderland Street, Clyde. The president of the institution, Mr 11. W. Robinson, occupied the chair. After briefly introducing the subject, the chairman called upon the secretary, Mr H. J. Cope, to read the annual report.
Annual Report of the Committee of MANAGEMENT OF THeDuNSTAN DISTRICT
Hospital : The Committee, in submitting this, their Annual Heport, have much pleasure in informing the Subscribers, that the Institution is in a most efficient condition, both as regards the treatment of patients and their health and comfort. During your Committee's term of office, the building has been much improved, and useful out-ofiices have been added. The original Hospital Reserve has been cancelled, and a reserve at the present site, of ten acres has been secured, about four acres of which are now fenced under cultivation, and your Committee leave it for their successors to include the remainder. There ned not for the future be any outlay for garden produce, while large quantities of vege tables will bo available for sale. During the past year the garden has supplied the wants of the Institution, and the .sum of £6 12s has been taken for what fckcWnas been to spare. In the committee, excepting the office of treasurer, there have been but few changes; your committee would strongly recommend, that in the present election the services of a gentleman be secured who will perform his duties during the wholo of the year—the office of treasurer being an important one, and requiring an intimate knowledge of the workings of the Institution; frequent changing necessitates considerable trouble. As a wish has been expressed by most of tho retiring members not to stand for re-election, it is desirable that you should in all cases select men who will devote themselves heartily to the work of forwarding the interests oT so valuable an institution. During the year, eighty-one in door patients have been under treatment—fiftytwo have been discharged cured or relieved and nine have died—twenty remain still within the Institution. Forty-one outdour patients have been also relieved, — making in all a total of 122 persons having received medical assistance from the Hospital. Your Committee Hiavo held twelve m nthly, two general, two special, ard three adjourned meeting.-—in all twenty meetings. The attendance has been as fellows—Cambridge, 17 ; Grindley, 16 ; Barlow, 15 ; Goodwin, 15 ; Marshall, 16 ; Cope, 16 ; M'l'onnochie, 12 ; Hazlett, 11; Monce, 9; Stratford, 8; Kdwards, 7; Robinson, 8 ; Hume, 5 ; Jack, 5 ; Booth, 4 ; ' larke, I—three treasurers have been elected during the p st year. Your Committee much regret the loss of the valuable services of Dr Chas Morice, honorary-surgeon, he having left for the West-Coast; in acknowledgement of whose services, your committee caused to be pre pared an illuminated manuscript testimonial, which has been forwarded to Dr Morice, with an appropriate accompanying letter.
The subject of allowing the HouseSurgeon private practice, -will doubtless engage the attention of the subscribers your committee, in the absence of a medical practitioner at Clyde, permitted the
house-surgeon, Dr. Charles Shaw, to visit a few patients ; they nevertheless beg to express an opinion, that private practice is detrimental to the efficient Working of tke Institution, and had better be discontinued as soon as circumstances wI 1 per mit; they however, will leave the matter in the hands of the new Committee to be dealt with. Financially, the Institution was never in a better position; the receipts for the post year have been £1971 16s Bd.-, made up as follows•
Total, .£2024 9 6 The average monthly expenditure being £l6B 14s 2d., or about £24 19s 9d. for every in-door patient treated. The liabilities of the institution are £lßl 14s 7d , to meet which there is cash in the bank, £9O 18s 10d., and £IO9O 3s 9d. subsidy duo by the ■ Government. The December accounts, your Committee beg to state, would have been paid by overdrawing the bank-account, had the treasurer, Mr S. M. Clarke, not having refused to sign the Cheques—they could not be paid without his signature All accounts due will however be settled as soon after the election of a treasurer as possible. Your Committee cannot too highly approve of the exertions made for the wellfare of the Institution by the housesurgeon, Dr Chas Shaw, including also the domestic servants, who really deserve your cordial approval. Your Committee also beg to express their thanks for the efforts made in the collection of funds by the Alexandra, ft. Bathan’s, Black’s, and Drybread local committees. The trust which you so generously imposed upon your Committee by lapse of time having now expired, they place the affairs of the Dunstau District Hospital in your hands, and hope that their successors' will take equally as lively an interest in promoting its welfare. (Signed) 11. W. ROBIN’SON, President.
