The Dunstan Times

FRIDAY, 7th DECEMBER, 1866

Beueiith the rule of men entikkly jusi, tin pf.n is MiOHTißit than the sword!"

Tl\e Soirees in connection with the Clyde Sunday bchool, postponed from August 24th. in consequence of the illness of the Superintendent Mr C-omuel Clarke will be held-on Wednesday next the 12th Inst., at the Church of iutgland Clyde.

The Cromwell fports'areadvertised to come off on Boxing Day. Over £BO is to be distributed in prizes. 1 lie adjourned meeting, from Wednesday last, of the Dunstan District Hospital Committee, will take place on Monday evening next, at 8 o'clock the 10th inst. at the council Chambers Clyde. It will he seen by our advertising columns, that A Ball and Bazaar, in aid of the Dunstan District Hospital, will take place ; the former on Wednesday the 3rd Jan. next, the latter on the following Saturday.

The large number of applications for publicans' licenses heard, by the Bench of Magistrates, assembled at Clyde, on Tuesday last, must be a convincing proof that there is a great disposition on the part of our storekeepers and traders "not to infringe the law by illicitly selling spirituous liquors. In numbers of cases our own personal knowledge leads us to the belief that the tax of .£2O per annum can scarcely be borne, and now that so many persons have come frankly forward to pay a license, the Provincial Government are in duty bound to give the license-holders «very protection against illegal dealers in spirituous liquors, otherwise they are open to the charge of obtaining money under false pretences.

Dunedin Punch in noticing the commencement of its second quarter informs the public, that that publication is under another proprietary ; also that any matter of a purely personal character will be ex eluded from its columns. This is an improvement which we hope to see carried out; in our opinion ' Dunedin Punch ' lias hitherto partaken more of the nature of a ' Paul Pry ' than a journal composed oi witty comments upon passing events. Its cartoons are far behind the mark, not alone in their artistic execution, but the subjects themselves have invariably become stale before the cartoons appeared. Our ideas of a ' Punch ' are, that it should have penetration enough to anticipate events, or at least to see them before they are known to the general public ; otherwise the cartoons and witticisms fall flat. Its. pointed attacks upon the Mayor and Town Councillors of Cromwell, we can only attribute to bad taste, and Dunedin ignorance and selfishness, and can assure ' Punch' that, were the infallible Dunedenites only one fourth as energetic, and enterprising as tin people of Cromwell ; Punch would enjoy a much larger circulation than it now does. A proposition was carried at the la,si meeting of the Queenstown Municipal Council, that 'the Councils of Cromwel and Clyde be respectfully invited as . means cf facilitating communication to a: jist 'his Council iu urging the Governroer.'

to complete the main trunk road without , delay; and also, in the matter of construct- ■ ing a bridge over the Shotover, at Forster'a Ferry.' The St Bathan's Christmas Sports are advertised to take place at St Bathan's, on Wednesday the 26th and Thursday tho 27 th hist. The programme we are informed will be on a most liberal scale, particulars of which will shortly appear. Articles of local manufacture appear to be on the increase. Mr M. fcardsley, the enterprising proprietor of the Jninedin Soap Works, is now supplying a long felt want, and many tons of a most useful article, which we have hitherto been in the habit of importing, is now manufactured iu the Province. We hope soon to see other spirited individuals following in their own special callings- Mr Bardsley's example. We have been r,qu, 6 ttd to state, that the annual examination of the children ,* attending the Clyde School, will take place I at tho School house, on Thursday the 13th / inst at 10 o'ehck a. m. Parents and (W/ interested are invited to atteud. 4BT The quarterly meeting of the BcnW of Magistrates, for the issuing of Publ.icana L-cencs, for the D.sirict of Clyde was 'held at the Court Hoi s•, Clyde, on Tuesday, the 4th inst.
