TOWN-COUNCIL CLYDE.

The fiffit meeting of the Town-Council was held at the Temporary-Chambers, on Monday the 6th instant., at 4 p.m. Present—J. D. Feraud, Esq., Mayor, and Councillors Morice, Hailett, Ryan, Goodwin and Cambridge. The Mayor opened the meeting in a few appropriate words, expressing his gratification and pride at being placed in the position he was, and aso his extreme pleasure at having so intelligent a body of Councillors as his colleagues. He did not for a moment hesitate* in sayings that with unity they would be able to overcome all little difficulties they might meet with, and that they would, by their a6ts arid deeds, prove to the electors their faith has not been betrayed. The business of the Council was inaugurated by the reading of two applications for the office of Town-Clerk, ordered to stand oven A letter was read by the Mayor, received from Mr Miller, late engineer to the City of Dunedin, applying for a similar situation to the Municipal Town of Clyde. Grd— i* to stand oven Councillor Cambridge said Ihe services of Mr Miller were not requited. During a private conversation he had had with Mr Coates, that gentleman had stated he would be only too happy to give his services and hold the situation of honorary-engineer to the Town of Clyde. Councillors Cambridge and Goodwin here urged the desirability of framing, or having framed prior to next meeting, a Code of Bye-laws, Standing-orders, &c, to guide them during their deliberations-. The discussion terminated in the following:— Proposed by Councillor Goodwin and seconded by Councillor Morice—That the Acting Town-clerk do write to some of the up-country municipalities of Victoria for copies of their bye-laws, standing-orders, forms, &c. Carried. During the debate respecting the pointment of Town-clerk and collector several clauses of the ordinance respecting the appointment, salary, <fec, of TownClerk were read ; after which, it was Proposed by Councillor Hazlett, and seconded by Councillor Goodwin, that applications be called for by advertisement, from persons willing to undertake the duties of Town-clerk and Collector of rates for the Town of Clyde; such application to state salary required, and also to name two responsible persons who will become sureties for suck amount as the Mayor and Council may deem fit. Carried. Proposed by Councillor Cambridge and seconded by Councillor Ryan—That the Mayor, J. I>. Feraud, >• sq., and the Acting Town Clerk be empowered to negotiate for the purchase of the building known »s the Victoria Hotel, together with all lands and other out-buildings connected therewith, the purchase money not to exceed £'2si) sterling. Carried. Proposed by Councillor Goodwin and seconded by Councillor Hazlett—That if the Victoria Hotel cannot be obtained by '*he ' ouncil for the purpose of Council Chambers, >tc., the Acting Town-clerk do apply to *h« School -Committee for the temporary use of the School-house for that purpose. Carried. Proposed by Councillor Cambridge and seconded by Councillor Goodwin—That the Major, J. D. Feraud, Esq., be empowered to apply to the hief-Commission-er of Police to appoint a constable to act as Inspector of Weights and Measures, also, Inspector of Nuisances, Carried. The Council was adjourned till Saturday the 11th inst., at 2 o'clock p.m. A vote ot thanks to the Mayor termin* ated the proceedings.
