A young man named Joseph Clucas, only nineteen years of age,. expired on Thursday evening, in the Dunstan Hospital, from the effects of injuries received through the overturning of a dray on the Raggedy Ridge a few days ago. An inquest will be held on the body this day, before Mr. Hemy W. Robinson, R.M., Coroner. The miners at Black's No. 3 have by joint labor erected a very commodious building, to answer the double purpose of amusing and instructing themselves during the winter evenings especially. It is floored with timber, and dancing assemblies can be held whenever a trip on the light fantastic toe may be deemed desirable, and as there are two devotees of the violin in the district no difficulty stands in the way of an agreeable evening's amusement. The room is to be well supplied with journals for the use of the public, and will be paid for by voluntary contributions. The chief object of the movement is to secure a place of recreation and amusement, and the example is deserving of imitation. The " Wakatip Mail" remarks : " A correspondent writing from Maori Point says: ' Things here are progressing steadily, and the sluicing claims give satisfactory returns. The tunnel claim of Halliday and party is also paying good wages. At Skipper's the various sluicing claims are giving good returns. The Mountain Race Company have accepted a tender for ten thousand feet of sawn timber, for fluming their water on to another terrace. On the reefs many are busy erecting, or preparing to erect, their machinery. At the claims of the British
and American, and Southberg's and Co.'a, the works are in a forward state, and in a very few weeks they will commence crushing.' Those interested will learn with satisfaction that Perry and Co., at Skipper's, have now got all their machinery on the ground, and hope soon to have it in working order. The inhabitants of this district, packers especially, will be glad to leam that Government has purchased the Arthur's Point Bridge, which we understand is opened free to the pub'ic. It is stated that .£250 was the price given; but in this amount was included valuation for formation of approaches."
