ST. BATHAN'S.
(from a correspondent.) The long anticipated cricket match between the Mount Ida and St. Bathan's came off on the ground of the latter on Monday last, when the Mount Ida team came off victorious as was generally expected. I say expected, because the members of that team are veterans of many a tough campaign, while, on the other hand, the St. Bathanites are composed for the most part of untried men, who have had little or no practice—indeed they entered the field under the sure and firm conviction that speedy defeat awaited them. Nevertheless, they showed better play than was expected—the bowling, however of the brothers Carling of the Mount Ida Club proved irresistible—few of our batsmen could maintain a position before them. As it may prove of some interest I here give a statement of the scoring: St. Bathan's Club.

The day was beautifully fine, and with the exception of a slight mishap matters passed off extremely well. There was a refreshment booth on the ground, and many ladies graced the scene with their presence.
In the evening the victors were invited by the members of the St. Bathan's Club to dinner at the Cornwall Arms Hotel, and certainly Mr Prout, who is noted for the manner in which he gets up public dinners, outdid himself on this occasion, not only for the number and variety of the dishes, under which, if I might be allowed to use the wdfrn-out simile, '•the immense table groaned," but the dessert and wines could not have been surpassed out of Dunedin.
It may fairly be presumed that the Mount Ida men will bear away with them pleasing recollections of the hearty hospitality with which they were received here.
