THE LAKE DISTRICT.

(t'KOM A CORRESPONDENT.) Queenstown, Jan 30. The late floods have occasioned great damage to all parts of the district— riven) and creeks have been Hooded—darns destroyed - and the numerous landslips caused by the heavy falls of rain, have in many eases broken away the races, so that every kind of mining has been temporarily suspended, and it will probably occupy three weeks or a month to repair damages.

iSix mining leaseholds of -100 yards l»j 200 yards has bi en already taken up on tho line of the Arrow Reef—and with one exception are in the hands of companies who are registering under the Mining Companies' Act, 18G5. As they are bound to commence operations, as soon as the Superintendent has intimated his intention of recommending the lease, we are likely to have a busy scene on the old Arrow. The machinery for the Criterion Co., Arrow, for Perry & Co., and Southberg fc Co., Skippers Creek, has arrivod here. There is rea'ly no track at all to the reefs in the latter locality, but the Government offer to supplement pound impound subscribed upon the sjwt up to £6OO. The proprietors of the old Scandinavian claim have sold out it is said for £6OOO to the agent of a company formed in Dunedin. Another company is in treaty to purchase the Big Beach claim Arthur's Point

The annual general meeting of subscribers to the Wakatip Hospital took place on the 27th inst. The attendancewas not very numerous, but comprised the principal inhabitants of the district. The balance-sheet produced by the Treasurer showed the very satisfactory sum of £1,085 to the credit of the institution. The following gentlemen were elected to serve on the Committee for the year : Messrs. W. G. Keey (President), J. Ross (Hon. Treasurer), J. S. Worthington (Hon. Secretary), Bcetham, R.M., Haughton, M PC, Eiehardt, Ha'.lenstein, Burns, Perry, Fisher, Wright, Wood, R.M., Cotton, Allen, Scoles, Williamson, Scanlan, Macdougall, Swyer, Bowman, and Doyle. The report of the Honorary Secretary showed i hat ninety-six patients had been ti-eated during the year 1865, of whom seventytwo had been discharged cured, the average cost, of each patient having amounted to £l9 10s. The proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the Resident Surgeon, Dr. James Douglas, which was carried by acclamation. In matters political there is little stir at present. The " Wakatip Mail," being entirely in the interest of an obscure coterie, assumes to lay down the law as to Provincial and General Government matters, and to dictate to the electors, but has really no influence whatever, and cannot be considered to represent the opinions of even a fraction of the constituencies. Mr. Manders comes forward on the support of this journal and its admirers as a candidate for the goldfields, but he may save himself the trouble, as good men and true will be in the field, and arrangements have been made for simultaneous sotion in the right direction.
