MOUNT IDA.

The Christmas holidays passed off merrily There were two days' sports, consisting of horse-racing, foot-racing, athletic exercises, and a variety of other amusements. The first day, Tuesday, the 26th ult., was wet and showery, which made things rather uncomfortable, but on the second day there was a great improvement in the weather, and every thir g went off as well as could be desired. The meeting, considering it was a first attempt, was a great success, seeing which there is a great desire that it should be an annual event, and, from the well-known sporting ability of some of the townspeople, and the liberality of the residents generally, the Mount Ida Eaces are likely in future to take a prominent position among the up-country race meetings. The Maiden Plate was won by Mr. Peterson's Happy Jack; the Mount Ida Handicap by Mr. J. Cowen's Black Roger; Hack Race by Mr. Nokes's Charley ; the Cheeroot Scurry by Mr. Pinder's Bobby of the Kyeburn. On the second day the Trotting Match (two miles) was won by Mr. Mallach's Grey Doctor, Mr. Douglas's Dick taking second place ; Mr. Inders's Shadow carried off the Consolation Stakes, Maori Boy second ; a Hack Race was won by Mr. Inders's Black Bess, Charley, who won a similar event on the previous day, running second. Sundry trotting and galloping matches took place besides those on the programme, and altogether, including the sports, two days' good amusement was provided.
