TAKAPAU RACES.
The Takapau race meeting which avus held at Oruawharo in a paddock kindly lent by Mr S. Johnston for the occasion, Avas in every way successful. The Aveather was moderately fine, the attendance and racing wore good. A Maori drum and concertina band was on the ground and enlivened tho intervals between the races. Tho first race on the card Avas the
HANDICAP HUEDLE EACE, Of 25 soys. ; distance 2 miles. W. Dennett's g g Steeldust, Ost 71b, (E. Gilpin) 1 W. Fairbrother's g g Wainui, 9st, carried 9st 91b, (Ellingham) 2 W. EdAvards' b g Doubtful, list, (Mahar) 3 Kakawia's h g Tauhara, Ost, (Ncal) 0 —Steeldust and AVainui wore about equal favourites in the machine Doubtful's condition was against him and he Avas never in tho race, and the pace mado by Wainui was too much for Tauhara, but they all went round and jumped well. AVainui took the lead followed by Steeldust until the last hurdle, when Steeldust closed on him and they took the hurdle together, and a good race took place for home. Steeldust winning by two lengths. £10G in tho machino, 35 being on tho winner. Dividend _2 14. HACK IIUEDLE EACE. Six horses started, and it was won by Jones' Blue Skin, Hostess boing a good second. £93 in the totalisater. Dividend £2 Is. MAIDEN PLATE, Of losovs., distanco 1 mile, w.f.a, W. Ellingham's b.m. Denbigh, 5 yrs., (Williams) 1 W. Dennett's b.m. Aimee, 3 yrs., (J. Woods) 2 Mackorsey's b.g. Liberty, 4 yrs. 3 B. Timor's b.g. Fordham, 4 yrs., (J. Lagor) .. .. • • .. 0 —Butcher Boy, New York, and AVallaby were scratched. Aimee was the first to Bhow in front, followed by Denbigh, Liberty, and Fordham. Aimee kept the lead until at the back of the course, when Denbigh Avent up to her, and the two came on together side by side to the last turn, whero Aimee ran out wide, and Denbigh got the lead, which she kept, winning by two lengths from Aimoo; Liberty a good third. There was £117 in the machiuo: £G0 on the Avinner ; dividend, £1 15s. TAKAPAU HANDICAP, Of 40 soys ; distance, 2 miles. S. H. Gollan's b h Oberon, 4yrs, Tst 71b (Hickey) * W. Ellingham's b m Denbigh, oyrs, Tst Olb (Williams) 2 J. Bailey's b g Butcher Boy, 4yrs, Gst (A.AVoods) 3 Maekersey's b g Breeze, aged, 7st 121b (Barlow) ° —Kincraig and Deceiver Avere scratched. Neither Breeze or Denbigh Avere looking in anything like tho condition they had been in on former occasions, and as Oberon looked very fit and Avell, he was mado a warm favorite, and ho justified tho confidence reposed in him. Breeze, who gave a lot of trouble at the start, was never troublesome after tho start, and I never saw him run worse. Denbigh had had som__iing taken out of her in tho Maiden Plato, so that Oberon had not much trouble to Avin, which he did by two lengths from Denbigh. There wero £244 in the totalisator ; £114 on Oberon; dividend, £2. The District Race was won by Orphan Boy, beating Hostess and Charley.
