-'General " Booth was recently charged at Sunderland, England, with non-pay-ment of the poor-rates on tho Salvation Army " barrack " atMonkwearmouth. Tho magistrates made an order for payment.

From a private letter received from England by a correspondent of the Hawera Star we extract the following paragraph: — "You are sending some grand mutton over here. It is well taken with, and butchers' meat is coming down fully 2d per lb in price. Tho New Zealand Mutton Company are openingshops in all the larger towns. In Newcastle they have a very large shop. They sell hundreds on a Saturday, and ono cannot get along the footpath for the crowd standing around. They sell legs at Sd per lb, necks aud shoulders at loins at 7d, and breasts at 4id and od. They are opening out shops at" Gateshead, Blaydon, Jarrow, and other places.

The hack races which were held at Paki Paki on Saturday were fairly successful. There was not a largo attendance of the public, but the racing was good. Messrs Stock and Cohen had their totalisator on the ground. The dividends paid out were good, the knowing ones not being able to spot the winners. The Hack Hurdle Race was won by Mr Kurn's Poporanga, dividend £G Bs. The Hack Fiat Race was won by Mr Broughton's Ohiti, dividend £7 18s. The Handicap Hack Hurdle Race was won by Jones' Blue Skin (10s olbs), and the Handicap Hack Flat Race was won by Jones' New York (Ost 21bs).
At this season when wo are one and all endeavoring to extract as much merriment and amusement as possible out of the dying days of the year, the ladies of St. John's Work Society are to be congratulated on the novelty they havo undertaken. They have gone out of the regular and well beaten tracks of bazaars, and instead give US ft pleasing-, cool—a great consideration In this weather — and enjoyable at« traction in the shapo of a garden party. The proceedings were opened this afternoon in Mrs Tylee's grounds, which aro in overy respect suitable. The treo3 aro of luxurious growth and afford ample shade for the stalls arranged beneath them. Seats are arranged in various shady retreats for those disposed to lounging in preference to joining in the lawntennis aud other g-ames provided. Rocking horses and boat swings are erected for juveniles, and for their delectation there will be a display of fireworks this evening, notwithstanding that the moon shines brightly ; and the Garrison Ban_E of course, will lend an additional charm to the scene. A substantial tea for those who go early and choose to remain during tho evening will be available on the groun_, as well as light refreshments, raspberries andcream, &c. The stalls are prosided over as follows, plain goods stalls Mra Hovell and Miss Stewart, plain goods stall No 2 Mesdames Provis and Newton, fancy stall Mesdames Cornford and Locke, refreshment stalls Mesdames Faulknor, Blytho, and Parker, the following- young ladies also assist among others whose names we did not ascertain Missea Tuke, Tiffen, and Carter. Miss Anderson, fantastically costumed in a tent by herself, is busily employed telling fortunes in the orthodox manner. Tho grounds, beautifully decorated with flags and banners, aro of themselves well worth a visit, and Mrs Tylco is to bo commended for throwing them open for such a good purposo. The entertainment will close this evening.
Tho following appears in the Freeman s Journal of October 23rd: — "To-day the Ro7. Felix J. AVatters, S.M., Catholio University School, Lower Leeson street; Rev. Nicholas Carolan, S.M., and Rev. William Gaggin, S.M , St. Mary's College, Dundalk, leave Dublin for London, whence they will sail on tho 29th instant by tho Orient lino steamers for New Zealand. The duty which calls the rov. Fathers away from Ireland is the responsible one of undertaking tho direction of St. Patrick's College, Wellington, New Zealand, lately founded by the Most Rev. Dr. Redwood, Bishop of tho Diocese. A great development of Catholic education in tho higher as well as tho intermediate branches is anticipated from the working of the Colloge, and the well attested ability and the energy of Father Felix AVatters aud his rev. colleagues must be of immense advantage in fulfilling tho high purpose for which the institution has been founded. Tho Rev. Fathers AVatters, Carolan, and Gaggin carry the best wishes of their numerous friends and former pupils, both in Dublin and Dundalk, that their long voyage to the other sido of the globe may be pleasant and safe, and their labors in their new field of educational enterprise as honorable and fruitful as in the Old Country."
A terrible murdor is reported from Schneoberg, Bohemia, where a bricklayer murdered his two children. His mother, on hearing of tho occurrenco, hanged herself. Tho murderor is missing:, and it is believed that he has destroyod himself. Hifl wife committed suicide some tune ago.
Finnish newspapers report that Professor Baron Nordenskjold is about to vary his Arctic experiences by an attempt to reach tho South Pole. Recently, it is stated, he left Stockholm for St Petersburg, in order to intorcst certain influential porsons in his now enterprise.
Tho Pope having officially warned M. Ferry that ho cannot recognise tho new French Divorce Law,-as tho irrevocability of marriago is the fundamental dogma of tho Church, the French Government has replied that it is a purely civil measure, and that His Holiness can use moral suasion through the bishops to prevent Catholics from adopting it.
On the 19th instant a AVellington telegram said a difficulty had occurred in a bankruptcy case, because there were only two creditors in the estate, and it required throe to form a quorum. Rule 23 of the Bankruptcy Act ISB3, is as follows:—"Nobusiuosa shall be transacted at any meeting unloss three shall be present, either personally or by separate individual proxies, at least three creditors, or all tho creditors if tho number does not exceed three."
A correspondent of the Daily News at Korosko says:—"The monotony of tho life of the three officers hero is something indescribable. An out-station in a bog in Ireland would be a paradise in comparison. Sand, sand, eternal sand, varied by black rocks. I remember describing a fearful hole I was quartered in, in the Soudan—Kawa, on tho White Nile; but thero one could only sally out at early dawn over grassy plains, among brushwood, and see the startled antelopo bound away and the bustard whirr overhead. Here, outside Korosko fort and hamlet, there is not a vestige of life, naked savage sterility, unrelieved by a single blade of grass."
Special interest this year attaches to the State carriage of the Lord Mayor Elect in the fact that the heraldic paintings on the panels and doors are tho work of tho lato celebrated deaf and dumb artist, Mr D. T. Baker, one of the most accomplished heraldic painters of his day. The carriage is provided by Mr Joseph Offord, Kensington, and is in many resiiects more than usually ornamental.
