The steamer Waihora, which arrived here yesterday morning from Auckland via the East Coast, struck some object about two o'clock this morning. The vessel was in charge of the second mate, and when off Orio Point, near Cape Palliser, she was felt to strike some hard substance, apparently on the port side. Almost immediately Captain M'lntosh, awakened by the shock, came on deck and had the pumps sounded, but tho vessel was found to be making no water. After the first shock, from the peculiar vibration experienced, it was thought that the propeller had been injured by coining into contact with some hard substance. On the AVaihera's arrival here a diver was put to work, and reported that one blade of the propeller was gone and another was slightly damaged. The surmise is that the broken blade struck some heavy floating object, or else was carried away through having a flaw in it. A preliminary enquiry into the matter was held yesterday afternoon by tho Collector of Customs, but no further particulars were elicited. The AVaihora sailed South this afternoon.

Tho Government declined to comply Avith the request, as they are advised that tho current Avhich affects vessels going from Dunedin northwards sets in to Timaru bight and comes out at Banks Peninsula.
