An exploring party was organised to report on the Mangahao and Tiramea blocks, and it waa also decided to ask the Minister of Lands to reserve 3000 acres of tho Maharnhara block for special settlement purposes. The terrible weather experienced hero tho last few d:<ys has been a continuation of thunderstorms and gales, accompanied by heavy rain. Such weather has never been known at this season of the year.
[Pun United Press Association.] Reeftox, This day. At the race on" Saturday in the District Plate, McGaffm's Sincerity dropped dead twenty lengths from home having burst a blood vessel. The jockey escaped uninjured. In the next mco Philosopher fell after going a milo and broke his back, tho rider (McMurray) receiving injuries which arothong-ht to be serious. Both horses were valuable and well bred animals. The course was in good order, so that Philosopher's fall is quite unaccountable. Blenheim, Teis day. Niasox, This day. Tlie weather was fine on Saturday for the regatta and cricket mutches. Iv the Senior four-onr outngg'er race, distance 2 miles, the Wellington Star Club's Autahi won by length and a half, after a capital race. Tho samo club's Comet was second, vv anganui Club's Wanganui third, and the kelson Club's Wakatu fourth. The Wanganui boat was about; two lengths behiud
the Comet, and the Nelson boat several lengths astern. In the Volunteer handicap race the Nelson Navals' Aurora was first and their Australia ser-oud. The Wangnnui men did not come to the post, The yacht race was won by ilie Wellington yacht Isis. For the Maiden four-oared inrigged race the Meteor (Wellington) and the Nelson Club's boat started, but the Meteor tilled off the wharf. The men and boat were rescued by the steam launch. One of the rowlocks was injured. The Nelson boat rowed the course alone. For the Senior Fours the Wellington crew did not Bt-irt, owing to their boat being injured m the previous race. The Maitaia (Nelson) and the Venus (Wanganui) started, the Nelson crew winning by two lengths. The cricket match, Poneke (Wellington) v. Nelson was won by the Wellington team by 35 runs. The official enquiry into the stranding of the steamer Star of the South was held before Dr. Gillson on Saturday, and resulted as follows :—" The wreck was caused solely by the culpable rashness of the master, Captain Charles Hodge, in entering the Grey river in reckless disregard of the harbor signals, and it is adjudged that his certificate shall be suspended for 12 months, and that he pay the costs of the enquiry." A bushman named Taylor cut bis throat at Kaipara on Saturday. Ho is likely to recover.
A body was seen floating in the harbor to-day, but it has not yet been recovered. It is supposed to be that of a seaman of the cutter Wangarei named Peterson, who has been missing since the 25th. A cottage, owned by Mr Thome, of Northeote, was burned down to-day. The building was insured for £100 in the South British office, and the furniture for £50 in the same office.
Mayor Waddell paid nn official visit on Saturday to the American -warship Iroquois, and was cordially received by the commander, Captain Stirling. The Iroquois stays here till the 20th of January, and then sails for Chili. At Tattersall's Inst night Tigredia was backed to win the Derby for £400 at 100 to 25 and 30. CnsiSTcnuEcn, This day. The third annual meeting of the North Canterbury Educational Institute was held on Saturday. There were seventeen members present. The committee's report stated thnt the membership numbered 73 —fourteen being ladies. There was a balance of £9 10s in hand. Several papers had been read, and considerable interest taken in the proceedings during the year. Mr G-. Hogben, of the Boys' High School, was elected president, and Mr E. TV. Just, of the East Christchurch District School, secretary. A discussion took place on school standards, and a general opinion was expressed that there should be seven instead of six, and that the course should be spread over seven or eight years. It is understood that His Excellency the Goveruor will leave Lyttelton on the Gth January, in the Hinemoa, for the purpose of visiting Picton and West Coast harbors in the Middle Island, in connection with the defences of New Zealand.
The circular cablegram received from Mr Service, Premier of Victoria, asking the New Zealand Government to join the older colonies in protesting against the action of the German Government in annexing territory in New Guinea is still under consideration by this Government. Corresponpondence is also passing on the subject between the New Zealand Government and Mr Service. Immediately on tho return of the absent Ministers the Hon. Mr Richardson will, it is expected, leave for Auckland on matters connected with the extension of further railways. The namo of Mr Larnach, M.R.R. for the Peninsula, is freely mentioned as likely to join the Government. The appointment has not yet been definitely decided, but negotiations between that gentleman and the Government are proceeding. So soon as the appointment is decided the Hon. Mr Reynolds, M.L.C., will, it is understood, resign charge of the departments ■which he now holds. Ivaikgura, This day.
