In discussing the question of German annexation in the Pacific, a section of the Jjondon press consider the annexation of a
portion of New Guinea and several of the Pacific Islands by Germany to be inevitable. The Echo applauds the annexation, and the Observer writes approvingly of Prince Bismarck's intention to create populous German colonies in the Pacific, the only ground for the objection is the possible influx of criminal classes.
In political circles the rumor is current that Lord Sandhurst is likely to succeed Lord Loftus as Governor of New South Wales.
The action of the Reichstag in repealing the law of empowering authorities to expel priests from the Empire is stated to have met with general condemnation throughout Germany. It is rumored in diplomatic circles that Prince Bismarck, the German Chancellor, intends shortly to start on a travelling tour for the purpose of recruiting bis health. A sensation has been created in Paris by a report that Bismarck shortly intends to visit that capital. The Standard this morning states that the German Ambnssador in London has been directed by his Government to notify that Germany has annexed the northern portion of New Guinea and a portion of the Admiralty Islands, New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover, the Marshall, Duke of York, and Anderson's Islands. Dr Flensch, naturalist, Ims been appointed Administrator by the German Consul to these newly annexed islands. The action of Germany in annexing these places is understood to be the result of negotiations which have taken place between the English and German Governments, and which commenced in July last.
