From the Carlylf-street end Lawson commenced the howling to the latter, the over being a maiden. Gooder opened to White at the railway wicket, tho batsman cutting the second ball for a brace off Lawson, next a no ball was scored, and then White lifted Gooder for three Wood getting a nice single to leg next ball, a leg-bye was then run, and the century went up amid applause. _ Off Lawsou's next over White snicked a single, Wood sending the player to leg for three The over being a ball short, Off Gooder's next Wood run a smart braco, and ■was clean bowled next ball by a beauty. Tho board showed 4-39-106 or 8-1 from the fall of the last wicket, the retiring batsman played sterling cricket without giving the slightest chance. Tuko filled the vacancy. White hit Lawson for a single, and cut Gooder for another, repeating the doso_ to Lawson, and off Gooder's next, doing ditto sending 110 up, topping tho Wellington score. White drove Lawson for a single, and cut Gooder for a single ilukely, hittino- Lawson hard fur a brace twice running, Tuid then a single, and getting Gooder away for a single. M'Girr relieved Lawson the street end, White got the new bowler away for a single. Tuko broke his egg by a nice snick for two, sending 120 up. Gooder was scntawavby White for a single, and sent M'Girr to square leg for two and a single. Tuke getting a single the same ovor. White sending the next into the Street for four, and 130 up. Cox relieved Gooder at the railway end with slows, Take getting a single off the first, _ White also getting a single. McGirr was prettily put away by Tuke for a brace and a single, successive balls. Tuko drove Cox hard for a single, White doing ditto, tbe same ovor he stepped out to tho slows, missed tho ball and was instantly stumped, tho board showing 5-W-138. Percy taking the crease. Tarleton then missed White badly, a single following. Then Buchanan put his leg where his bat should have been, and the board showed 7 5 154. Downes succeeded, and sent the slow bowler away for a single, White doing ditto off both bowlers, and then was cleaned bowled by a rubbishy ball from Cox, tho board showing 8—87—157. The retiring batsman had played a good, useful iiminys, marred by many chances. Newton took the vacant crease. Tho new-comer hitting one of the slows up for a single, and then Downes went out, and was promptly stumped by Nicholls, tho telegraph reading 9—1—158. Edwards, the last man, going in. Cox then missed Newton off McGirr. Tho batsman then scored a single next ball, and the succeeding ball clean bowled Edwards for a duck, the total being 159. Cox's bowling was utter rubbish, but it got rid of tho tail ofShe Napier batsmen for every few runs. Nicholls kept wicket in grand style, and the fielding all through of the Wellington men was clean and good. Edwards bowled from the street end, Nicholls getting his first away for a single, and then Knapp gave a chance to Spivey at the wicket, which was declined. Nicholls drove high and hard at Newton, but Tuke made a good catch, and tho board showed 1 l—3. Heenan filled the vacancy, but the over was a maiden. The new comor got a single off Edwards, cutting Newton for a singlo, Hccnan getting Edwards nicely to leg for a brace, and sent the samo bowler all along tho carpet for another double, a singlo to tho same player sending 10 up. After a leg-bye had been run, Knapp faced Newton, and was clean bowled, tho telegraph reading 2-2—ll. Roberts took the crease. Edwards sent down a maiden,- Heenan getting a single off Newton. Gooder filled the vacancy, and scored a single of Newion, but in trying two runs for° a bye Tarleton was nearly run out. Another bye, and Tarleton skied a ball fo Edwards, who held it. 49—9-G. McGirr went in, wanting 4 runs to save a one innings defeat, Geoder got 2to square leg off Edwards, and 2 byes followed, thus saving the single innings' defeat. After a. maid "from Newton, Gooder maiden a leg hit for two oft' Edwards. McGirr was caught off Newton by Finch at mid-on. There wero 12 extras, the innings closing for 52, leaving Hawke's Bay 3 to get to win. ROWLING ANALYSIS. Newton, 82 balls, 4 maidens, 20 runs, 6 wickets ; Edwards, 80 balls, 7 maidens, 20 runs, 3 wickets. Finch and Tuko started for Napier, the former got lbw the first ball from Roberts, and thus completed his pair of "specs." Wood went in, and scored ono off last ball of tho over. The first ball off McGirr, Wood was caught very smartly at the wickets by Nicholls! 2—l —1. White, who was loudly clicored on going in, scored 1 off first ball, and Tuko a single off next, thus winning by j I run and 8 wickets.
