December 12. A cricket match betAveen the English and Australian teams commenced hero to-day. The latter were represented by Alexander, Blackham, Boyle, Bonnor, Bnnnerman, Cooper, Giffen, Murdoch, McDonnell, Palmer, and Scott. Spofforth Avas absent, and MidAvintcr Avas unable to play on account of illness. The Aveather Avas splendid throughout tho day, and the attendance of spectators was good. The Australians Avent in first, and at the luncheon adjournment they had lost two Avickets for 40 runs. Bannerman, lbw, 2 ; McDonnell, not out, 33 ; Murdoch, caught, 5. (Received December 13, 0.45 a.m.) The Australians continued at the Avickets all the afternoon and put together a total of 243 runs before the last wicket fell. The following are the remainder of the scores : — McDonnell, bowled, 124; Giffen, bowled, 10 ; Scott, boAvled, 18 ; Bonnor, caught, 4 ; Alexander, run out, 3 ; Blackham, caught, GG ; Palmer, caught, 6 ; Boyle, caught, 1 ; Cooper, not out, 0 ; extras, 11; total, 243. McDonnell's play was much admired, and his brilliant hitting was frequently applauded.
