SPORTING NOTES.

[By " Hippo."! The weights being out for the Auckland C.J.C. AVellington and Dunedin Cups. I have compiled a list of the horses that are engaged in more than one of the Cups. After going carefully over them I consider that the Auckland Handicap is the worst and the Dunedin the best. How they managed to let Administrator into the Auckland Cup with 7st 21b I cannot imagine, last A*car he ran a dead heat with Radames for the Easter Handicap carrying Tst 51bs, and did the two miles in 3 mins. 35| sees., Avhich was tl\o best time for the distance made in Noav Zealand last year, and now ho has the advantage of a year on his shoulders and 3lbs off his back. There is no doubt ho is wonderfully well in, and if fit and well must win, unless Black Rose, Necklace, or Tigredia can manage to beat him, These four and The Poet are to my idea the best treated of tho lot. I shall wait for the acceptances for the other Cups before I discuss the chances of the different horses. The C.J.C. acceptances close today, Dunedin on the 27th, and AVellington on January 20th. As the Auckland and C.J.C. races are run at the same time, of course the handicaps are made shortly after the Wellington races, but I think it a great mistake that the Wellington and Dunedin handicaps should be made before the Auckland aWI C.J.C. races are run, as the handicappcrs would have a good line to go by from these races, and Avould be more likely to be able to compile handicaps that would produce more acceptors and starters, and there would be ample time for it, as tho AVellington races are not run until about five Aveeks after the Auckland and C.J.C, and the Dunedin about eight Aveeks after. Had the suggestion that Avas made some time ago by the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club of forming a New Zoaland Racing Association been carried out, no doubt these matters Avould have been arranged better. It is to be hoped before long some such association will be formed. The following are the handicap weights for tho four Cups. Those marked thus * have accepted for the Auckland Cup:—

—I have omitted the names of tho horses that arc engaged in only one of the Cups, it-y-vill be seen" that the Wellington Handicap is essentially a high Aveight one. Out of 37 horses nominated for the Auckland Gup 18 have accepted, 30 nominated for the C.J.C, 3G for Wellington, and 40 for Dunedin. There will be any amount of racing in the district during Christmas and New Year's Aveeks. First, there will be the Jockey Club's Boxing Day meeting at Hastings, next day ths Fftki Paki races take place, then Takapau on Monday the 29th, AVaipawa County, and AVoodthorpe on Ncav Year's day, Onga Onga on the 2nd, and Hampden on the 3rd. The acceptances for the AA'aipaAva races close on Wednesday, 17th, and for the Boxing Day and Woodthorpe races on the lGth. Tho following are the nominations and weights for the Hampden races:—Handicap Hurdles of 35sovs. Denbigh list 71bs, Doubtful list, Steel Dust 9st 71bs, Wainui Ost. For the Hampden Stakes Handicap of 30sovs., distance 2 miles. Kincraig Sst lOlbs, Deceiver Sst Gibs, -Denbigh Sst 21bs, New York 7st Gibs, Steel Dust Tst Tibs, Orphan Boy Tst 41bs Butcher Boy Gst 71b, Firefly 6st 71b. What I said respecting the AVeights for the Dunedin races coming out before tho Auckland and C.J.C. races is applicable to these up-cOux-try meetings. It would have been far more satisfactory had the handicaps been made after the Boxing Day meeting. The weights could have appeared on Saturday and acceptances closed on Monday. The horses aro all local ones, and in these days of telegraphs and telephones owners could have known their horses' AVeights on Saturday morning. There is -nothing to prevent this being done, and I am quite sure it would pay.—Mr J. BarloAV informs me that Lis term of engagement with Mr Allan McLean will be up the middle of next month, when he will be leaving, and will be open for engagement.—Pearl and Sibella are scratched for all their Boxing Day and New Year's Day engagements.—This morning I Avas on the course before five o'clock. Percy Martin's team Avere the first to put in an appearance, and Leonato and Oberon were the first to strip. The pair were sent two miles on the plough fast, both ".inp_ well. Oberon is looking and going as Avell as ever I sa-v him. The Laird then Avent a mile by himself, and was then joined by a hack and Avent another rouudfast.too fast for thehack. Foreruilner and Deceiver then came out, and vere sent twice round the plough fast, ihe heavy going seemed to suit Deceiver

better than it did Forerunner, who likes smooth troing, but both Avent very well, and will "-ive good account of themseh-es at the coming' races. Miss Dargon and Fordham wero sent tAvice round at a useful pace. AVild Dayrell went rather more than twice round by himself at a strong pace. Pastime and Tailor Avere the next to work, and did their two miles at a fair pace. Steeldust Avent by himself, and cantered to the back of the course, Avhen he put the pace on and went once round fast, cantering home. Assegai and Parnell went twice round together. Assegai has improved much the short time he has been here, and will look a very different horse on Boxing Day to what he did at Petane. Emir Bey went once round and was then joined by Ncav York and Yankee, and went another time round fast. Emir Bey could gallop over the other two at tbe finish. New York and Yankee then went round again by themselves. Aimee Avorked by herself. Blueskin and another hack did a milo spin. Capt. Russell's do not work until after breakfast. Both have improved in appearance since Edwards has been back. Wanda leaves for Wellington, per steamer, to go to her neAV OAvner.
