SPORTING NOTES.

[By "Hi_po."l

There have beep many complaints lately about the manner that the names of horse? accepting for races have been telegraphed to the Hawke's Bay pax>ers. When the weights for the Auckland Steeplechase appeared, both Clarence and the Lad had 12st allotted to them. In the Saturday Advertiser they both appear with 12st 91bs- opposite their names. The correct weights are Clarence 12st lOlbs and The Lad, 12st. Tho nominations for tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Boxing Day meeting must boSonsidered satisfactory. ■ There are none but'local horses engaged, there being races in so many other parts of- the colony at the same time it was not expected that any but local horses would nominate. I hear "that Mr Johnson, has received an offer for his hack maro Wanda, and if sold ehe will bo going to leave the district, so owners of other hacks will now have a bettor 'show in the forthcoming hack races. Writing about hack races reminds me that I have been asked to remind owners of hack horses that tho usual Paid Paki races will be held at Paki Paki on Saturday, December 27th,' the day after the Hastings races, and that the races will be the same'as last year, for hacks only. As several have expressed their intention to run horses at the meeting a good day's sport may be anticipated. The nominations for the Waipawa county races are good, but would have been better had it not been that there are races at Woodthorpo on the' same day. There are two fresli horses nominated for the Waipawa meeting Mr Douglas' True Blue who' is by Premier—Dolly Varden, last year he'won a hack race at Master ton; and started in three other races but failed to score a win. The other one is Mr Mackersey's Liberty, he is by PatriarchBay Duchess, who is own sister to Longlands. He has never yet started for a race. I. would remind owners of horses) that tho nominations for the Takapati * races' close" oh Wednesday next 10th December. The weights for tho Dunedin meeting will be declared to-day, next week I will review the four handicaps,:. Auckland, Canterbury, Wellington, and Dunedin. _ notice that there is a marked difference in the weights of some of tho horses that'are engaged in the first three Handicaps. It is said that Mr Hammond the owner of St. Gatien, the winner of the Cesarewitch, won £40,000 by his colt, "winning this race, it was a great' performance for a three year old to carry Bst lOlbs and win such a race, which is two miles and a quarter. It is not often wo hear of two dead heats being fun by 'the 1 same horses, But this took place at Nottingham on October 2nd in the Friar Tuck Selling .Plate, Scr/fcch-Pearl aiid'CandahaT 11. ran a dead _K»t for first place..- Afterwards in running it off, after .a desperate race, the judge again declared it a dead heat, the stakes were then divided. . _, [In the Australian Cup won by Saladm .in 1872, the grey ran two dead heats with Trying Dutchman- and then . won the third raco by a head. —Ed, D.T.] •..-.-■■
