[eeoji our.own correspondent.] AA 7 airoa, This day. At. the annual .meeting of the Council yesterday all the Councillors were present. Mr John Hunter Brown and Mr S. Carroll were both proposed for the office of Chairman. The voting being equal, Mr Carroll (Chairman pro. ton.), gave his casting vote iv favor of Mr Brown, who is elected accordingly.

Though but a small section is opened in tho city, the tramway is carrying 1000 passengers daily. £200 has been subscribed towards a testimonial to Mr Fraser in commemoration of the rescue of the Triumph.

A young man named Re-id, aged 18, was killed yesterday by the .'overturning, of a. cart. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned.
New Plymouth, This day
The Toranaki Herald's Urenui correspondent writes that a meeting was held on Tuesday night, when a telegram .was sent to the. Hon. Mr Ballauce inviting him to a-, lunch there on, his way to Mokau.
Considerable reductions are being made in the Constabulary force. Mr John Ellist was again elected Chairman of the County Council yesterday.
