MAKOTOKU DISTRICT SCHOOL.
[TO THE EDITOB OF THE DAILY TeLEGEAPH, J Sie,—lt was with considerable surprise that I read a local in yesterday's Herald relating to the Makotoku school. In justice to the first teacher Mrs Thomson, and as a parent having a child under her charge, I must contradict some of the statements it contains. So far from the school being first started and in an unsatisfactory condition, it had been opened for two years previously, and was doing good work. At the last examination held by Mr Hill, when under Mrs Thomson's ohargc, over fifty children were present, a number of whom were presented in the fourth standard. It was well known and commented upon at the time, that owing to the hurried manner in which Mr Hill conducted the examination (for reasons best known to himself), the results given were very low, and surprised those who had children there. Miss Evers may be all and more than she is described, but it is not fair to cast a slur upon one who for six years worked hard and well as a teacher in Norsewood and Makotoku. Justice. Makotoku, Nov. 22nd, 1884.
