ACCIDENTS AND CASUALTIES.

Thames, This day.

A serious mining accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Caledonian low level company's workings, resulting in the severe injury of three miners named Samuel Howard, Alfred James, and Nicholas Pcarce. The men had charged three holes with blasting powder, which they proceeded to explode by " spitting " the fuse, or igniting the powder in the notch at its end. One of the charges exploded instantaneously, throwing the three unfortunates down in the drive, but the earth displaced by the other two shots fortunately passed over their prostrate bodies. James and Howard wero badly burned, but their eyes escaped injury. Howard suffered most seriously, the thumb and index finger of his left hand being shattered to such an extent as to necessitate amputation. Pearce escaped with some severe contusions.

Mr James Udall, an old and respected resident, was lost overboard the s.s. Beautiful Star this morning. Ho was observed to leave the saloon at 1 a.m., and an hour afterwards his hat was found aft tho vessel. It was then searched, but Mr Udall could not bo found.

A young man named William Sash was drowned at Northcote on Saturday while bathing. It is supposed he was seized with cramp. John Median attempted suicide by jumping into tho harbor on Saturday. When rescued by a waterman he said he was tired of life. He had been drinking heavily. Three men have been seriously injured by an explosion in a mine at the Thames.

Edward Stevens, eight years, was drowned at South Dunedin on Saturday through falling in a tank on his parents premises

Chiustchurch, This day

Mr George Watson, the well-known cricketer, died early this morning, aged 29. He had represented Canterbury in all the principal matches for many years past.
