At twenty minutes past 4 o clock on Saturday afternoon a fire occurred in the office of Mr A. S. Austin, solicitor, Fordstreet. A quantity of valuable documents were destroyed. No cause can be assigned for the fire, which wasquickly extinguished. Mr Austin was uninsured. The building, which belongs to Mr T. W. Jones, who is absent in Tasmania, is insured for £1000 in the Victoria office, but the damage is slight. At 11 o'clock yesterday morning two small wooden buildings in a right-of-way off Colombo-street South, belonging to Mr Benjamin Hale, rope and tentmaker, were burned down.... They were used as stores. The buildings were insured for £200 in the Liverpool, London and Globe. The stock was insured for £1000 in the Sooth British. The loss is considerably over this, as £700 worth of binder twine which was destroyed was uninsured. Mr S. Nashelski, ironmonger, had £150 worth of stock stored m one of the buildings, but it was ininsured Hardly anything was saved from either of the buildings. The cause of the fire is not known.
