WAIROA.
[FROM oub own correspondent.]
The contractor for the erection of the Waihua bridge—Mr A. Toyser -is getting on well with his work. All the timber is now on the ground, and the bridge is expected to be open for traffic by tho Ist of January, 1885. Messrs. Garrett and M'Kenzie, itinerant etorekeepers, are about to flit—if they have not by this time done so. During the Land Court they squeezed the orange dry, and now seek "fresh fields and pastures new." Talking of storekeepers, reminds me that Messrs. Ashwin Brothers have opened in the store lately occupied by Sargisson and Co. ... The nominations for the representation of the. Waikaremoana riding in tho "Wairoa County County Council were—J. H. Brown, W. Maloney, E. H. Tnnks, and R. E. Stevens. For Mohaka, I hear that Messrs. Sim, Steele, and M'Andrew are returned unopposed. The lambing throughout tho district this year has been very good, over 100 per cent, being tho record.—Wheat, barley and potatoes are looking well.— Thof ruit crop is looking splendid all over tho district.—Feed is abundant, in fact wo have had such a good season for several years. On (lit that the gentlemen of the Acclimatisation Society have signed the death -warrant of the hawks which prey on email birds, could you not, Mr Editor, try and put a word in for tho poor farmers who are pestered with small birds introduced by the Acclimatisation Society. The ravages of these pests on the grain corps are painful to •witness, and provocative of sultry language on the part of the farmer.
