WOODVILLE.
■; |FBO3I OUR OWN COKHESI'ONDENT. ] ■This evening a general meeting of the Woodville Settlers' Association was held, ■when a largo number of members were present. The chief business of the evening •was to accede to the request of the Minister. for Roads by nominating a gentleman who should occupy the position of commissioner to represent the bush districts on the Waste Land; Board at Napier. This was a very considerate allowance of the Government, for we shall now be represented by one from our midst, who will have some opportunity of really bringing forward the feeling of those who live in this locality. Several candidates were mooted as likely to be proposed, and a large meeting was expected. Mr Chas. Hall, chairman of the Road Board was one. Mr Geo. Hutehings was also spoken of, and several seemed inclined to ask Mr Tanner ,to represent us, ■whilst Mr Haggen, pro_>rietor of the Woodville Examiner was also expected to be brought forward. However, since the condition expressly stated by the Government the way that the gentleman we selected for their , approval should be a resident in the Bush, all hopes of Mr Tanner being elected were futile. At the meeting, the only two names proposed were those of Messrs Hall and . Huggin. Mr Hall then XC(_uosted the permission of his proposer and seconder to withdraw which being granted, he did, and Mr Haggoii was elected without further ado. This gentleman, is the hon. secretary of the Association, and has already done much good work on the behalf and under its auspices, so that wo may reasonably expect he will do the same for the district on the Board. Of course the suggestion has yet to be accepted and ratified by Government, before Mr Hnggen's nomination will be gazetted. One good thing is visible, and on it the settlers of Woodville are to be congratulated. The Settlers' Association is being looked upon in the light of a responsible body, which is most satisfactory. Although defeated, Mr Hall still retains the confidence of the settlers as a genuine public man. Tho nominations for the seat in the County Council also closed to-day, when the following gentlemen were nominated — Messrs Edward T. Sturdy, Charles Hall, and James Hutcbings. The running will be between the first two, and I am inclined to think that Mr. Sturdy will be returned, since the whole of the Danevirke and Puketoi settlement as well as a large proportion of Woodville aro favorable to his candidature. As- in all other places and elections however, all parties ai'o fairly confident of success. Mr. C. B. Morrison had Toeen requested to come forward, but was unable to do so, oh account of his not being on, the roll. There are several others besides him who find their names off the roll, why, it is hard to say, for had it been made up from' that which tho Road Board have revised and corrected, there wouldhavebeen few of such unfortunate omissions. This is only another example out of many of tho fact that : Countics such aa that of Waipawa are too straggling to be ■Workable. I notice the Waipawa Mail is defending the existence of that huge white olephant with its bitter weight. This is perhaps natural, but there is a great feeling amongst some of the settlers here that such un advocate is not one which is most beneficial to our interests at'any rate, and some aro already expressing- a hope that its local contemporary, which bids fair to,see the light very soon, will bo more independent in its views, at all events as far as the Bush is concerned. So we join thoso Tvl'o wish it every success. The pigeon, shooting match at Danovirkc ■which was held on Saturday was a great success, although there wore not quite a sufficient number of birds. In the trial stakes of £1, three birds each, Mr W. Hallett Avas the successful competitor, killing all his birds, Messrs Wilson, Cowper, Crane and Uratt, coming next with two each. Tho handicap, 6 birds each was well won by Mr Crane, who killed with each shot, Messrs Cowper, M'Grath and. J. Jones divided tlic second money.between them. The railway is to be opened as far as Tahoraite in a.few weeks time, probably this means about the commencement of the new year. However, even this will mean a great- convenience to those who do much travelling in the district, and to commercial men especially.
Messrs Stevens and Gorton have not announced their first sale yet, but the preliminary operations of getting the yards in order, are already in hand.
' Tho station site is said to be practically decided upon, and is expected to be behind, the booking-office, traversing from thence towards M'Lean-street, and perhaps a little in the direction of Burgoyne-street. This means that sections in sub-section. 42, and those opposite and those in 17, will be close to the station. Tho news is, however, not quite confirmed, as for as 1 have heard. Thb Government Beem to have a wholesome dread' of paying compensation to ewners of sections. This must be said for those who have land hero, they know how to ask a pretty ' goad figure for it, although. They seem anxious to sell That is the. reputation that is firmly established- in tho minds of some of those in liuadquarte-'S at any rate.
The manager for the Cheese and Bacon Factory is expected to arrive at any moment ' now, and operations will probably commence in real earnest "towards the end of the current month. Then will tho hopes of the settlers be realised. Let us hope that the success of the venture may be complete.
