V.R.C. SPRING MEETING.

The Victorian Eacing Club held their first day's racing of their Spring meeting at Flemington to-day. The early morning ■was dull and cloudy, but the weather improved, and before the racing commenced ■was all that could be desired. There was a great attendance of spectators, among those present being their Excellencies Sir H. B. Loch, Governor of Victoria, Sir G. Strachau, Governor of Tasmania, and Sir W. F. C. Robinson, Governor of South Australia. The following were the results of tho principal events of the day: — MARIBYRNONG PLATE, Five furlongs. Mr J. H. Hill's Newstead, NeckersgatAda, SstlOlbs .. .. ■• 1 Hon. J. White's Monte Christo, ChesterKathleen, Bst lOlbs .. .. 2 Burelda .. .. .. 3 —Uralla and Cracker colt were next. Time, lmin. 3secs. The following horses came to tho post:—Arsenal, Danseuse, Campanilla, Magnifier, Lady Claudia, Sauvignon, Chaublis, First Prince, Local Option, Umbra, Uralla, Monte Christo,. Corday, Burelda, Burford, Cairo, Melodious, Newstoad, The Teacher—Cracker colt. A good start was effected. Newstead was the first to get away, followed by Lmbra and Monte Christo. Newstead maintained the lead till the finish, and won easily by five lengths. A length separated Monte Christo and Burelda. DERBY. Mr M. Seahorse, Mozart, Leperello, Rufus, Merr'imu, Bargo, Tremando, Gratitude, and Sandal. Gratitude was first to show in front, with Tremando, Mozart, and tieahorse next, and Leperello, Bargo and Hippogrift' last. Passing the stand Merrimu assumed the command, half a length in advance of Gratitude, then came Tucinando, Hippogriif, Mo/art, and Bargo, with Rufus last. Merrimu maintained his advantage round the turn, and along the river he led about i.i length in front of Gratitude, ■who was just clear of Tremando and Bargo. The relative , places remained unchanged except as regards Bargo, who had improved his position, until .at the abbattoirs Gratitude resumed the lead, with Merrimu at her heels, Tremando, Seahorse, and Bargo following in the order indicated. - Up to tho homo turn Gratitude continued to lead the field, and was first to enter the straight, with Tromando, who had come forward, running in second .place. Bargo, who ■was on tho outside, how made his effort, and succeeded in passing Treinaudo, and joined issue with the leader, but only too quickly to relinquish that position in favor of David, who took the lead below the distance. At this point Rufus, who had held a position in the body of the ruck throughout, came with a rush, and quickly overhauling the leaders, tackled David, and won a good race by half a length. Betting at the post—Bargo, 5 to 4; Seahorse, Bto 1; others, 10 to 1. MELBOURNE STAKES. A mile and a quarter. Mr J. A. Inglis' Malua, 9st 31bs .. 1 Mr J. Redfearn's Plunger, Ost 31 bs .. 2 Hon. W.
