HASTINGS TOWN BOARD.
A meeting of the Hastings Town Board was held .it 2 p.m. yesterday. &**™- Messrs Weliwood (chairman), _ hoi email, Ellis, and Tanner. The Chairman said that the meeting was called chiefly tor tlio purpose of receiving the report of the subcommittee, Avho Avere appointed to confer with Mr Rochfort re the drainage scheme, that they had met Mr Rochfort last Saturday Avho had agreed to design a scheme, hike the levels, draAV a planj and estimate costs tor 2 per cent, on the estimated costs. But that if his plans were accepted, be would superintend the carrying out of the works and his charge then would be 5 per cont.i instead of 2 per cent. That the BoW would have to employ an overseer AvhV would be under his (Mr Rochfort; s) orders. Mr Ellis stated that they (thosubfommittee) had arranged to meet Mr Loch - fort next Monday morning, and go with hmi over the proposed site of the dram, and confer with him on thchiibject, and, thattnenMr Rochfort would draw up a report on the subject with the estimated costs &c., which
report Avould have to come before the Board to be approA-ed, or otherwise by them before any further steps could bo taken.in the matter. The chairman was authorised to cdl a meeting of the Board as soon as the report was* received. It was proposed by Mr Tanner and seconded by Mr Foreman that in future the Board meet every third Thursday iv each month at 2.30 p.m. Tho chairman reported that he had estimated the cost of filling in Eastbourn-street at about £45, and that Messrs Ruddock and Fryer had guaranted to collect £10 towards the expense. Proposed by Mr Tanner and secouded by Mr Foreman that the clerk he instructed to write to the district engineer, asking that a crossing might be made over the railway line at the end of Eastbourn street, and at the _ same time to point out the great inconvenience to traffic ariuing through the mam road being- so often blocked by tho trams •shunting across it. and that by Eastbourn crossing being opened traffic would not necessarily be stopped. It was also proposed to send a copy of the resolution to Captain Russell and ask him to use his influence to forward the matter, and it was decided that should the crossing be made tho Board would agree to fill in the road.
