SPORTING NOTES.

[By " Hirro."! The following racehorses will be leaving Hawke's Bay 'to-day and to-morrow and Monday to fulfil their engagements in Christchurch and Poverty Bay. —Percy Martin with Pearl and Marksman, and AY. Edwards with Leonora, leave for Christchurch, and J. Munn with Abraham and Christina, C. Warren with Miss Dargon and Flying Scud, J. Jones with Emir Bey and Yankee, and Clifford with Leonato, all leave for Poverty Bay to try their luck thero next Weclncsda3', when it is to be hoped they will give a good account of themselves and bring back a fair.share of the stakes with them. Miss Dargon is certainly very well in in both the handicaps, and if she is herself on the day will be very handy at the finish. Flying Scud is also very well in in the hurdles, aud bar accidents must have a good show in the race. I forgot to state that Minuet also leaves here for Poverty Bay. W. Edwards informs me that Captain Russell has named his three-year old filly out of Nelly-Teranga, Elena, and the three-year old MusketDundee Katie filly, Katie Ferguson. She is to visit Foul Play this season, and that Nelly and Sidney will both go to Vasco di Gama. The Waipawti Racing Club aro to be congratulated on the programme they havo issued for New Year's Day. This Club has been getting- more popular year by year, and has been gradually increasing their stakes. In previous yeuvs they had to contend against a bad course and bad accommodation, but all this is now being rectified, as they have obtained a fresh i>iece of land for their course, and aro about erecting a good grand stand and other accommodation, so as to make it second to no other country race course in Hawke's Bay (Hastings, of course excepted). lam glad to hear they intend to alter their programme by haying ! tho trotting race come between the Maiden Plato and the Railway Handicap this is as it should be. The club this year are giving away £320, the chief event being tho W.C.R.C. Handicap of £150. It is to be hoped their enterprising spirit will be rewarded by good entries and nominations. The Petane Club have received a very fair lot of nominations. As I hear the course has been much improved we may expect (should the day prove fine) an enjoyable day's sport there next month.
