Cross THIS Company is projected for the purpose of acquiring tho well -known Theatre Royal, now and for the last six years so successfully conducted by Messrs Swan and Ashton, who agree to sell to the Provisional Directors all tho Buildings and Leasehold Land, Fittings, Fixtures, Furniture, Stage Properties, Scenery, Machinery, Sec, Sec, now owned by them, for the sum of £3000. It is thought by the Promoters that the time has now arrived when increased accommodation is requisite, and Avith that view they have had plans prepared giving 10 feet extra Avidth to the body of tho Theatre. The Dress Circle will be advanced 22 feet nearer the stage, and will be provided Avith the newest and most comfortable of upholstery and seating accommodation, notably the patent iron-framed Chairs iioav in fashion in the latest built Opera Houses and Theatres. There will be four Private Boxes connecting tho Circle Avith the Proscenium. The Stage will have an additional 10 feet in depth, Avith a Proscenium opening of 27 feet, and a proportional increase in height. When these alterations aro completed the building -will accommodate without any croAvding- an audience of upAvards of 1200 persons, thus ranking- as ono of the largest in Ncav Zealand, and the revenue receivable from letting' will bo increased in proportion. The largest companies Avill also be induced to perform in this town which they iioav pass by, and in conjunction Avith the contemplated improved shipping facilities Avill insure the highest talent visiting Avhat is admitted to be the best show toAvn in the colony for its size. Tho ventilation of tho houso and its lighting arc to be made a special feature of the improvements, as also the extra exits and staircases supplied in case of an alarm of fire. Separate cloak and retiring rooms for Ladies and Gentlemen are a part of the scheme. To facilitate the more frequent use of the building for Fancy Fairs, Matinees, Horticultural and Poultry, &c, Shows, more windows wiil bo proA'ided, and a project Avill be submitted for the appproval of the Directors to light the Avhole houso by Electricity in the latest and most inexpensive manner, thus offering tho boon of effective lighting unaccompanied by oppressive heat in the summer months. The acoustic properties of the Theatre have not been overlooked, as the proposed plan supplies a new dome roof, which will materially add to the pleasure of tho patrons of the entertainments. It is for the purpose of carrying out these desirable alterations that the Company has been projected, and as testing the public feeling on the subject a hasty canvass for support has been made resulting in upwards of £3500 worth of shares being taken up, thus rendering the successful floating of the Company a certainty.
