MELBOURNE.
This day. Mr Service, the Premier, has telegraphed to Mr Murray Smith at London instructing him to consult with the other AgentsGeneral on the question of a protectorate over the Pacific Islands, and to co-operate with them in joint representations to Lord Derby, and if necessary to Mr Gladstone, on the subject of such protectorate. It is understood that the Governments of South Australia, Queensland, and New Zealand have telegraphed similarly to the AgentsGeneral for those colonies. lurther communications have passed between Mr Service and Mr Stuart, the Premier of New South "Wales, on the subject of the former's proposal, but the breach between the two colonies is in no wise lessened.
Messrs Hardy and Sidey liave kitchen fenders up to. 5 feet, coal scoups, firo irons, and coal shovels, just opened up.
